The Panther Pulse
Pershing Middle School Community Newsletter: Vol. 2, Issue 6
Principal's Message
On behalf of the entire Pershing faculty and staff I would like to cordially invite our families to our Back to School Night (BTSN) event scheduled for this Tuesday, September 12. The evening will begin with a short presentation in the auditorium at 5:30 PM and then families will visit each of their child's classes for 10 minutes. Students are welcome to attend with their families but the event is designed with a parent audience in mind. During the event, we also encourage families to visit the Scholastic Book Fair happening in the library, seek assistance at the PowerSchool Parent Portal Help Desk in the library classroom, and check out the various tables set up around the campus providing information about volunteer opportunities, social emotional and commuity resources, and clubs we have on campus this year. Students should have brought home a handout on Friday where they could write down their class schedule for families. Parents are responsible for supervising their children during the event. We are looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday and sharing our instructional vision for this school year.
I believe strongly that parents are important partners in our students' education which is why I wanted to share that we have discovered some students are creating inappropriate accounts on Tik Tok and Instagram and then making negative posts about their fellow students and staff. This constitutes cyberbullying and has no place in our community. Students who are following these accounts and liking and sharing those negative posts are also contributing to the problem. We are asking families to monitor their children's social media and make sure that they are not following or posting items to accounts that contribute to cyberbullying.
If your child is following or commenting on any of the following accounts on Tik Tok or Instagram we encourage you to have your child unfollow the account and report the account if you are seeing evidence of cyberbullying. Fortunately, there do not seem to be very many of these negative accounts connected to our school site but we want to stay on top of this. We did notice there are quite a few negative "pms" sites online but the vast majority appear to be linked to a Pershing Middle School located in Houston, Texas. Below are the negative accounts we believe are connected to our school site.

Thank you in advance for your support. We are truly blessed to have a parent community that is so engaged and works in partnership with the school.
Sincerely,
Melanie Kray
Families, this is the last week of the Panther Pledge Drive.
Thank you to the nearly 200 families who have made the pledge, your support is much appreciated!
There are, however, nearly 900 students attending Pershing and we are seeking 100% participation. Even if you are not able to make the suggested $75 Panther Pledge we enourage you to contribute an amount that works for your family. Please remember every little bit helps. If our remaining 700 families were able to contribute even $25-50 we would be very close to hitting our fundraising goal. So please make your pledge today! And don't forget to share the link with family and friends. The Panther Pledge drive will end September 16th.

A reminder that the Panther Pledge is a suggest $75 donation. Money raised through the Panther Pledge goes directly to students and pays for the following activities this school year:
- 6th Grade Camp Scholarships so we can continue to be one of the few middle schools in SDUSD who send our 6th graders to camp
- 7th Grade Enrichment Experience
- 8th Grade Promotion and End of Year Activities
- Field trips, guest speakers, teacher stipends to support enrichment activities in the classroom (ex. science teachers used their stipend last year to create a garden to give students hands on experience with botany).
