FROM THE LRC
January 17th is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Here are just a few great local volunteer opportunities:
https://www.stcparks.org/volunteering/ Opportunities to volunteer with the St. Charles Park District are almost unlimited. Help out at a one-day special event or assist on an ongoing basis.
https://www.andersonanimalshelter.org/volunteer The volunteer program is for adults (ages 16+) and offers individuals the opportunity to work on behalf of the shelter’s animals to make a positive impact in our community.
https://www.easterseals.com/dfv/get-involved/volunteer/ Read a book, play an instrument, or sing a song! Any teen, adult or senior who would like to make a positive impact in the life of someone with a disability is the perfect candidate to volunteer with Easter Seals DuPage & Fox Valley.
St. Charles Nature Volunteers - Volunteers help with brush clearing, invasive species removal, seed collecting, native plantings and more! To volunteer, call 630-513-4399 or email naturevolunteers@stcparks.org.
In addition to volunteering to serve our local community, we encourage you to check these new and fascinating books written by Black authors that add important context to the world we're living in, as well as shedding light on systemic racism and discrimination. Literature is a powerful force which can lift up voices that have been historically left out of the conversation. Here are three great reads:
Light for the World to See: A Thousand Words on Race and Hope by Kwame Alexander From NPR correspondent and New York Times bestselling author, Kwame Alexander, comes a powerful and provocative collection of poems that cut to the heart of the entrenched racism and oppression in America and eloquently explores ongoing events. A book in the tradition of James Baldwin’s “A Report from Occupied Territory,” Light for the World to See is a rap session on race. A lyrical response to the struggles of Black lives in our world . . . to America’s crisis of conscience . . . to the centuries of loss, endless resilience, and unstoppable hope. Includes an introduction by the author and a bold, graphically designed interior. Read the review at GoodReads
Footnotes: The Black Artists Who Rewrote the Rules of the Great White Way by Caseen Gaines If Hamilton, Rent, or West Side Story captured your heart, you'll love this in-depth look into the rise of the 1921 Broadway hit, Shuffle Along, the first all-Black musical to succeed on Broadway. No one was sure if America was ready for a show featuring nuanced, thoughtful portrayals of Black characters--and the potential fallout was terrifying. But from the first jazzy, syncopated beats of composers Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, New York audiences fell head over heels. Read the full review at GoodReads
