FEBRUARY 7, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
This past week, we’ve had some fantastic performances by our performing arts students and programs. Our One Act Play cast and crew made it to the Section Finals last Thursday. Their performance was powerful and moving. I am so proud of the students, staff and families that contributed to this amazing production.
Then, this past Sunday, our all-conference vocal and instrumental student musicians had the opportunity to perform with the other all-conference musicians from each of the Northwest Suburban Conference schools at the NWSC All-Conference Concert. The concert was amazing, and our students represented our school so well. What a great evening of music, performed by such talented and engaged student musicians. I am immensely proud of our performing arts students, staff, and programs and look forward to the spring performance season.
This evening, we look forward to connecting with students and families as they think and plan for the future.
- The Explore Your Option event for grades 9-11 is from 5-7 p.m. and is focused on course registration for next year. There are a variety of scheduled information sessions, our counselors will be available, and visitors can browse the opportunities fair for athletics and activities. I encourage you to check out the agenda and stop by. There’s a lot to think about and plan for, and we’re here to help.
- For our seniors, we are also hosting a FAFSA financial aid event. Come get help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. While the overall federal FAFSA process is delayed this year (frustrating, we know!), we’re continuing to offer families support to complete the application for student aid. Even if you haven’t RSVPd, you are welcome.
Our ongoing partnership is what leads to student success in the classroom, in the arts, in athletics and co-curriculars, and beyond. One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!

From letter sounds to chapter books, caterpillar to butterfly
The journey of the emerging reader is a transformation much like that of caterpillar to butterfly. As news headlines and legislative actions focus on the science of reading, Spring Lake Park Schools is in its third year of implementing new resources aligned with practices to help more butterflies take flight.
During the summer of 2020, a team of Spring Lake Park Schools elementary teachers spent 1,500 hours completing a curricular review that brought Wit and Wisdom and FUNdations to grades K-6 for the 2021-2022 school year. That review was the culmination of extensive work to align the latest research in the science of reading to the district’s instructional frameworks.
When the Minnesota legislature passed the Minnesota Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act last spring, Spring Lake Park Schools was already years into the implementation of the "evidence-based" instruction the legislation requires. The goal is to ensure student mastery of five components of reading – phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency and reading comprehension.
Take a peek, from kindergarten through fourth grade, to see how letter sounds turn into chapter books. Read the story of the emerging reader.
