Little Lancers Lowdown

Dear Little Elba Lancer Families,

These past few weeks at Elba Elementary have been very busy! You may have heard about the fun our Little Lancers had during Homecoming week, at the Pep Rally, during Red Ribbon Week, or Trunk or Treat event. Our students also learned about how to avoid using drugs and alcohol during our Red Ribbon Week. Plus, you may have seen students dressing up for Red Ribbon Week, including wearing red, Hawaiian gear, tie dye, camo, and Elba apparel.

I continue to read a different book each day to a different class and many of the books this month were focused on fall or Halloween. Being able to do this daily is such a blessing and allows me to share my love of reading.

November is a time to reflect on what we are thankful for throughout the year. I am thankful that you share your children with us here at Elba. I am extremely thankful for the memories we are able to make on a daily basis. And, above all, I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as the Elementary Principal and for the amazing teachers and staff we have here at Elba.

As we continue through the school year, I hope that our partnership will help to foster the absolute best learning experience for our students. I am excited about all we are accomplishing together for our children and look forward to continuing to celebrate our collective success this school year. As Mrs. Rosales mentioned in her Parent Square update, Elba Central School was approved for FREE breakfast and lunch for ALL students in grades UPK-12. Free meals will begin on November 1, 2023 and last until June 30, 2027 (or unless otherwise modified by the government).

Past due balances are still owed, a second lunch will be charged, and snacks can still be purchased daily.

As the weather gets colder, we would love to continue to bring our students outside as much as possible this fall during recess and/or free time. Please be sure to send your child(ren) with a coat on a daily basis. Thank you!

Over 40 students participated in the Walk & Roll to School Day on October 4th. Students, parents, and volunteers met at the Elba Town Highway Department to walk to school. Thank you to our nurse, Mrs. Piskorowski, and all of our volunteers for a successful event!

Our littlest Elba Lancers are continuing to learn the routines and procedures of school and have had huge growth in just two short months. UPK had a Fall Festival in October with the help of volunteers and the Elba FFA. Thank you to everyone who helped to make it possible. Another highlight of their month was learning about community helpers and fire safety. We had several fun visitors, including Deputy Young and Deputy Ferrando, and the Elba Fire Department. What a great month of learning!

Our kindergarteners are also having an amazing month of learning. Mrs. Allen's students have been learning about their 5 senses. Mrs. Merkel's students learned about bats and learned to retell stories and make predictions. A highlight also was a visit from the Elba Fire Department. Our littles are also learning more letters and how to sound out words like cat and mat.

Our first graders created book characters this month out of pumpkins. This was my favorite project when I was a 2nd grade teacher. Our students were very creative! In math, they are learning addition and subtraction strategies and are getting lots of practice in fact fluency. In STEM, students had the opportunity to organize Halloween-themed task cards where they had to make a pattern and follow the rules.

Second graders continue to learn new phonics skills and heart words. In math, they continue to learn strategies to add and subtract and learned about different types of graphs. I even caught a glimpse of 2-step word problems being solved!

In writing, third graders were working on their personal narratives. I was able to check out how well they were able to edit their writing pieces - checking for capital letters and punctuation. Third grade transformed their room on Halloween to engage in some fun learning! There were several challenges for students to complete.

Our fourth graders are learning strategies to decode multisylllabic words! They even told me some of the strategies when I popped in their classroom this month. In Social Studies they learned about NYS, including the landforms that make up our state. In writing, they even wrote their first personal narrative.

In Social Studies, students have been learning about the Western Hemisphere, including several countries in North and South America. They have learned about the states and capitals of the United States too! In science, our fifth graders learned about plans, including photosynthesis.

We also had some great helpers to decorate the sidewalk for Chalk the Walk during Red Ribbon Week!

Our biggest Little Elba Lancers are sure busy! In social studies they have been learning about ancient Mesopotamia and were able to compare it to their knowledge of the United States. In math, our 6th graders have been learning about fractions and decimals, including multiplying. In ELA students are learning how to write good and detailed sentences.

Some of the 6th graders were also great helpers to Chalk the Walk! They were very creative, even on a chilly morning!

Congratulations to our October Lancer Leaders! These students demonstrated being respectful, responsible, and safe and were nominated! Keep up the good work!
