Superintendent's Community Update

Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday vacation and is rested up and raring to go for learning, exploration, and growth in 2024.

As I’ve shared many times before, learning begins with the basics including attendance and literacy; two things we are razor focused on in our school district. Attendance Matters, Every Day! I will keep on emphasizing this because if our students are not in class, they are missing out on critical learning time. Learning time that is difficult to make up, and time that research shows is foundational to success graduating from high school and going on to college and career attainment. As of this week, more than 20% of our students are on track to be chronically absent this school year. That means these students will have missed 10% or more of the 2023-2024 school year. We need to rally together as a community to support these students and get them back in the classroom and back on track to meet important learning milestones. Let’s get that 20% down as much as possible in the coming months.

Fortunately, our One Newport community has been coming together to develop creative solutions to address chronic absenteeism and small group discussions have been underway since October. You can be part of the solution by attending an upcoming forum focused on chronic absenteeism being hosted by the reNEWPORT Community Group on Thursday, January 18th from 10:00 AM to noon at Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn Street. Come share your ideas on what encourages our kids to attend school every day, and what obstacles may be holding them back. We will also offer additional times and dates for those that would prefer a smaller setting. So stay tuned for more information.

This week I am happy to share more updates on our students' successes at our RHS Science Fair right before the holiday break. Thank you to our fabulous teachers and staff for helping to make this a success, along with our volunteer judges. Another celebration goes out to our NACTC students from AOIT (Academy of Information Technology). Congratulations and a big shout out to them for receiving the Excellence in Academic and Fan Favorite Award for the high school division. Woo-Hoo!! As you will read further down they did an amazing job.

Another big announcement as we start the new year is that the last beam for the new RHS building project is here! On Friday we will be having a beam signing for our students and staff to participate in. Next week, weather permitting, we will have the topping off ceremony and raise the last beam to be put in place for the new building. This is a huge milestone for the project. Congratulations to our wonderful Co-Chairs Ms. Bolan and Ms. Boatwright along with our School Building Committee members for all their hard work in helping us get to this point with our partners Gilbane, SLAM, and Downes.

Finally and most importantly- tonight, Wednesday, January 3rd at 5:30 pm at Pell Elementary School and live streamed our Newport School Committee and City Council members will be coming together to learn about student test scores on standardized tests and what steps the district is hoping to take going forward. We appreciate that all our leaders are getting together now to listen to Director Aull’s presentation, as well as hear our building leaders and directors share their thoughts with everyone. We are hoping that this is the first of many joint workshops for the School Committee and Council to help support our educational system in Newport and invest in our students, staff, and families now and going forward. We encourage everyone to come with the spirit of working together and making us a strong educational community. As mentioned earlier, the other foundational element to learning that we are focusing on, along with improving attendance, is attaining strong literacy skills at the elementary school level. Our teachers for the past two years at all levels have been involved in professional development to help support our students in reading. Research clearly demonstrates that if students have not mastered literacy in the first years of their education, they are unlikely to catch up as they move on through middle and high school. We want to prevent that learning gap from even starting by doubling down on literacy attainment at the elementary level. This will be one of the building blocks of our new Newport Public Schools strategic and educational plan. We are still working on this document, and will have more to share in the coming weeks. Estimados padres, familias y personal de las escuelas de Newport:

¡Bienvenidos de nuevo y feliz año nuevo! Espero que todos hayan tenido unas maravillosas vacaciones y estén descansados ​​y con muchas ganas de aprender, explorar y crecer en 2024.

Como he compartido muchas veces antes, el aprendizaje comienza con lo básico, incluida la asistencia y la lectura; dos cosas en las que estamos muy concentrados en nuestro distrito escolar. ¡La asistencia importa, todos los días! Seguiré enfatizando esto porque si nuestros estudiantes no están en clase, están perdiendo un tiempo de aprendizaje crítico. Tiempo de aprendizaje que es difícil de recuperar, y tiempo que las investigaciones muestran que es fundamental para tener éxito al graduarse de la escuela secundaria y continuar con la universidad y el logro profesional. Afortunadamente, nuestra comunidad One Newport se ha estado uniendo para desarrollar soluciones creativas para abordar el ausentismo crónico y desde octubre se han llevado a cabo discusiones en grupos pequeños. Puede ser parte de la solución asistiendo a un próximo foro centrado en el ausentismo crónico organizado por el Grupo Comunitario reNEWPORT el jueves 18 de enero de 10:00 a.m. al mediodía en Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn Street. Venga a compartir sus ideas sobre qué anima a nuestros niños a asistir a la escuela todos los días y qué obstáculos pueden estar deteniendo. También ofreceremos horarios y fechas adicionales para aquellos que prefieran un entorno más pequeño. Estén atentos para más información.

Esta semana me complace compartir más actualizaciones sobre los éxitos de nuestros estudiantes en nuestra Feria de Ciencias de RHS justo antes de las vacaciones. Gracias a nuestros fabulosos maestros y personal por ayudar a que esto sea un éxito, junto con nuestros jueces voluntarios. Otra celebración es para nuestros estudiantes de NACTC de AOIT (Academia de Tecnología de la Información). Felicitaciones y un gran saludo para ellos por recibir el Premio a la Excelencia Académica y al Favorito de los Fanáticos para la división de secundaria. Woo-hoo!! Como leerá más adelante, hicieron un trabajo increíble.

¡Otro gran anuncio al comenzar el nuevo año es que la última viga para el nuevo proyecto de construcción de RHS ya está aquí! El viernes tendremos una firma de vigas para que participen nuestros estudiantes y personal. La próxima semana, si el clima lo permite, tendremos la ceremonia de finalización y levantaremos la última viga que se colocará en el nuevo edificio. Este es un gran hito para el proyecto. Felicitaciones a nuestras maravillosas co presidentas, la Sra. Bolan y la Sra. Boatwright, junto con los miembros de nuestro Comité de Construcción Escolar por todo su arduo trabajo para ayudarnos a llegar a este punto con nuestros socios Gilbane, SLAM y Downes.

Finalmente, y lo más importante, esta noche, miércoles 3 de enero a las 5:30 p.m. en la Escuela Primaria Pell y transmitida en vivo, nuestro Comité Escolar de Newport y los miembros del Concejo Municipal se reunirán para conocer los puntajes de los exámenes de los estudiantes en las pruebas estandarizadas y qué pasos espera tomar el distrito en el futuro. Apreciamos que todos nuestros líderes se reúnan ahora para escuchar la presentación del Director Aull, así como para escuchar a nuestros líderes y directores de edificios compartir sus pensamientos con todos. Como se mencionó anteriormente, el otro elemento fundamental del aprendizaje en el que nos estamos enfocando, además de mejorar la asistencia, es lograr sólidas habilidades de lectura en el nivel de la escuela primaria. Nuestros maestros durante los últimos dos años en todos los niveles han estado involucrados en desarrollo profesional para ayudar a apoyar a nuestros estudiantes en lectura. Las investigaciones demuestran claramente que si los estudiantes no dominan la lectura en los primeros años de su educación, es poco probable que la alcancen a medida que avanzan en la escuela media y secundaria. Queremos evitar que esa brecha de aprendizaje comience incluso duplicando los logros en literatura en el nivel elemental. Este será uno de los pilares de nuestro nuevo plan educativo y estratégico de las Escuelas Públicas de Newport. Todavía estamos trabajando en este documento y tendremos más para compartir en las próximas semanas. On December 20th, Rogers High School students showed off their projects at the annual Science and Engineering Fair! More than 140 students presented 100 science and engineering fair projects to over 55 judges. Scoring was extremely close as many projects were judged to be outstanding by the volunteer judges from the community including University of Rhode Island, Salve Regina University, Johnson & Johnson, NPEF, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, Administration, faculty and staff, RHS alumni, and leading RHS seniors.

The science and engineering fair was made possible with contributions from the Newport Public Education Foundation.

The winners will represent Rogers High School at the state science fair competition in March at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI).

¡El 20 de diciembre, los estudiantes de Rogers High School mostraron sus proyectos en la Feria anual de Ciencias e Ingeniería! Más de 140 estudiantes presentaron 100 proyectos en la feria de ciencias e ingeniería ante más de 55 jueces. Congratulations to NACTC AOIT 3 class representatives – Ava Mosher, Madison Biastre, Brady Silveira, Sam Biastre, Aleisha Thaxter, and Dionni Guzman – who created a CS4RI presentation that had middle school students driving robots, fixing computers, checking to see if their school had been hacked, and picking locks!

Their presentation was recognized as the Fan Favorite at the December 20th CS4RI Summit and they received the Excellence in Academic Achievement award in the High School division.

Felicitaciones a los representantes de la clase NACTC AOIT 3 (Ava Mosher, Madison Biastre, Brady Silveira, Sam Biastre, Aleisha Thaxter y Dionni Guzman) que crearon una presentación de CS4RI en la que estudiantes de secundaria conducían robots, reparaban computadoras y verificaban si su escuela tenía ¡Ha sido pirateado y forzando cerraduras!
