Vikan Knights, ARMOR Up!
From Principal Velez
Dear Community,
As you know, our youth is growing up in a world that is highly connected. They have access to news as they are developing. They are growing up in a world that bombards them with information about their immediate world (community) as well as the world at large (USA, other countries). This amount of information (much of it negative) can cause youth to feel extremely anxious, sad, and concerned about their future. When this happens, our youth look up to the adults around them to help them make sense of everything. As a parent/legal guardian, you are the first line of defense.
In this note, I would like to share with you resources that can help you engage in productive conversations with your child about current events, violence, war, and other topics that they are accessing via their electronic devices. I hope these resources will help you get the conversation started.
Handle With Care: Supporting Young People During Crises Learning for Justice: “People are continuously struggling to respond when traumatizing events occur in our communities, across the country and around the world. For families, educators, and community members who must respond to the needs of children as a traumatizing event unfolds, we’ve gathered recommendations and resources to support you.”
How do I talk to my kids about violence in the news?and Explaining the News to Our Kids- Common Sense Media: “Even when we're struggling, our kids look to us for answers. Knowing how and when to talk with kids—and when to listen—can help. Get age-appropriate ideas for talking and listening.”
Stay strong Vikan...and ARMOR up!

Morning Arrival and Pick up
Please help us out by making sure that your child is at school no later than 8:15 AM. We are having a large number of students arriving after 8:30 AM. If you drop off your child at 8:30, they are already 5-10 minutes late to class. It is imperative that you support your student in making sure that they get to school on time...on time is 8:15 AM.
If you are picking up your child at the end of the school day, please do so before 4:15 p.m. to give us plenty of time to get them from their classes. We are not able to call students after 4:15 because the bell would ring before we are able to get to them. Students might be in PE, working on a science project, or finishing up an assignment. Getting ready to leave takes time.
Thank you in advance for your support in making sure you child arrives at school on time.
