Hello, Surfside families!

It is my sincere hope that you enjoyed a great week.

It was a pleasure meeting and greeting those families that attended our Back to School event last night. One of the best things about our school is the opportunity to build relationships with families that create a strong network of support for our students.

Next week we celebrate our Surfside Rising Star of the Month, Asawer. She will celebrated by Oceanside's Chamber of Commerce, our mayor, representatives from the state government, and of course our superintendent and board of education. Asawer has worked extremely hard through some of life's ups and downs and is on track to graduate in excellent standing. We celebrate and recognize Asawer for her perseverance and for personifying our core values: self-direction, effective communication, and accountable citizen. She will also have the opportunity to apply for some scholarships designated specifically for this year's Rising Stars.

Many of our Surfside students, like Asawer, have demonstrated our Shark core values and are building a foundation for their future. For example, our elementary students have been building their writing skills by creating narratives that meet minimum word count and accuracy requirements. It's been a lot of fun watching the kids challenge themselves every week to create bigger and more complex writings.

Enrollment for the Device Protection Plan for the 2023-2024 school year is now open and will close on September 30th! This plan offers coverage for accidental damage, theft, and more until June 6, 2024, excluding charger replacement and intentional damage.

iReady Diagnostics

Now that the Diagnostic Window has closed, the student's Instructional pathway will be set according to the results. Contact your Supervising Teacher if you need this pathway adjusted to meet the needs of your student. Results will be mailed the week of September 18th.

iReady Math and Reading

Students who regularly engage in iReady Math online for at least 1 hr per week see greater growth than those who do not participate. We recommend 15-20 minutes a day which is approximately 1-2 lessons per day. Mastery at 80% or higher is the goal. The lessons match what your child(ren) needs to learn during the year and is an excellent resource. This also meets their math goals for Independent Study, allowing the math worksheets to be supplemental.

While the weather is warm, please make sure your student stays hydrated. Pack a refillable water everyday. Water refill stations are located around campus.

TriCity Food Panty will be serving the Surfside community once a month this year. Please see the distribution dates and times below:

Surfside high school students...if you are interested in attending this event please pick up a packet in the Career Center or front office.

Throughout the month of September, NCTD is actively participating in a nationwide effort to remind the public of the importance of rail safety. The NCTD Board of Directors also unanimously adopted September as Rail Safety Month to educate the public about dangerous behaviors that lead to tragic and fatal incidents on and around railroad tracks.

We hope you will partner with us to change the staggering rail incident statistics. California continues to have one of the highest numbers of trespassing and rail-related deaths in the nation. In 2022 alone, there were 256 rail incidents in the state, of which, 97 resulted in injury and 159 were fatal. These incidents could have been avoided by following rail safety practices.
