Rāmere Friday 28th of Haratua May (T2: Wk4 of 10)
Our Tumuaki Principal
Kia ora koutou.
From the Principal's desk:
- Principal's Challenge: Entries are coming in from authors and illustrators. It's very exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing and reading more.
- Cross Country: The Lower Mataura Valley Zone Cross Country is on Wednesday 2nd of June at the Wyndham Racecourse. Notices went home on Tuesday of this week. If you didn't get one, it is linked to our website as well under the Upcoming Events on the main home page. It has also been posted to our Facebook page on Monday 24th May.
- Teacher Only Day: Next Friday 4th June, the staff have a Teacher Only Day refreshing their first aid skills. This is important to us so that we have the right and up to date knowledge to support children should there be a need. School is closed for students.
- Learning Partnership: We know that when parents and school are on board together, pushing in the same direction, children progress. A big part of this is the learning partnership work (reading, spelling, word learning, basic facts) that every child has. The investment of 10 minutes each day over the time your child is with us in our school, puts them in such a strong position when they move from here and take their next step into Year Seven.
- Farewells: For a number of children today is their last day with us at Edendale Primary School. We wish you all the best with your big shifts and settling into your new school. We hope that your time with us was positive, affirmative and has set you up well for your future.
- External Property Project: We have come to the end of our external property project. It has taken a lot of time to get to all the final details and fix-ups, with the last being done last Friday. We are pleased with how it has come together. It presents the school in a new, fresh and open way, enabling everyone to see quickly where anyone is. This is important for child safety and property safety. Thank you for your patience with this. It has taken around a year of on-site work and several years prior to that with all the behind the scenes planning.
Thank Yous - Team Edendale
- Jacob Smyth: Jacob is our Board of Trustees (BOT) Chair and as such leads the BOT in their governance role for the school. Jacob leads our eight general meetings in a year, one Annual General Meeting and one Strategic Planning Meeting. As well as that Jacob is our BOT representative on the Lower Mataura Valley Kahui Ako Stewardship Group that meets once a term. The BOT's role is creating the school of the future, so they are out in front preparing the way for the school to move into. Jacob is at the forefront of this, leading the BOT forward.

Senior Whanau Clubs - Can You Help?
We'd love to have some interested community members join us for Senior Whanau Clubs.

Please contact the office admin@edendaleps.school.nz.
LMV Zone Cross Country - Wednesday 2nd June
Please make sure that you have read the details on our notice regarding the LMV Cross Country that went home on Tuesday.
Children are to be in their sports uniform. They run in gym shoes.
It is wise to bring a change of clothes and a warm jacket as it is winter and it will be cold and wet underfoot.
Like athletics, we will take all the children down in buses and the parents are welcome to take their children home after their event. However, if they are a place getter we would like them to stay for the presentation at the end. We will return back to school on a bus, bringing all children who did not go home with their parents.
We are needing three parents to be marshals. Please contact the office if you can help with this.
Celebration Time - Thursday 2.30 pm
With our First Aid TOD being on Friday our Celebration Time will be brought back to Thursday at 2.30 pm unless the cross country is postponed to that day. It will be weather dependent.
This coming Friday the staff are involved in a Teacher Only Day to update their First Aid certificates. The school is closed. Thanks for your support with this.
Queen's Birthday - Monday 7th June
Monday 7th of June is a public holiday being Queen's Birthday. The school is closed. Enjoy your long weekend next week.

From Monday 28th June to Friday 2nd July we are holding our Mid Year Interviews. At these interviews, you receive and then discuss your child's report for the first half of this year. The interviews are for 15 minutes and we encourage the children to be there as it is about them and for them.
Soon we will publish the online booking code for this so that you can select a day and time that suits you.
Accurate Contact Information - Keep Us in the Loop
When families/whanau have a change of physical address, email addresses, cell phone numbers or emergency contacts for children we need to be kept in this loop.
Please give us a ring should this be the case.
Our Team for this Week - Team Tui
Kia ora,
We have had a busy but great start to Term Two in Team Tui so far.
We welcomed the colder weather with some autumn poetry writing and leaf rubbings which you will see in the pictures below. Then we began persuasive writing which has led us into writing our speeches. I am looking forward to the children convincing me about a topic they are passionate about!
This term we have been lucky to have visits from Sarah, our Sports Activator, who taught us basketball skills, and Elgregoe, who taught us about being kind to others while showing us some fascinating illusions and magic.
For DRIVE this term we have been researching early Maori and concluded our findings by creating a poster in groups. We learnt about how the Early Maori used to live: games they played, shelters, clothing, and food they ate. For the rest of the term, we are learning about our own background and where we/our families come from. We will turn this knowledge into a visual pepeha. We will also be learning about Matariki and why it is important to celebrate this.
We are excited for Kapa Haka every Wednesday afternoon, with a lot of Team Tui students joining the team.
We have also been practising hard for Cross Country which will take place next week.
Nga mihi,
Jasmine Collett

Principal's Values Award
This week the Principal Tumuaki would like to acknowledge Aria Power for being a contributor of values to our school.
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Weka
Team Weka is proud to have a role-model like Alazay Ruwhiu for Haepapa - Responsibility.
We can trust that Alazay will be doing the right thing, in the right place, at the right time. She always uses her polite manners and speaks kindly to her peers and adults alike.
Alazay is organised and ready for her day of learning - she brings back her reading book each day, her pencil ready, unpacks her bag and does her morning duties without us having to remind her. She takes good care of her belongings and shows responsibility and care when using any of the classroom equipment.
Alazay also takes responsibility for her learning, working hard both in the classroom tasks and at home. She enjoys participating in class activities whereby she asks questions, always offers great ideas, and is prepared to do more work to help with her progress - Ka pai!
Alazay you should be super proud of yourself for all of the hard work you have been doing in Team Weka. You are a valued member of our class. Keep up the awesome work!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kea
Baz Hoekstra is the Team Kea MVP this week.
Baz is a super young man who shows our school value of Haepapa - Responsibility.
Baz walks into school with a happy smile and gets himself organised for the day. He is a very kind class member who gets along with everyone. He makes new children feel welcome and plays fairly and sensibly with others.
I can trust Baz to make great learning and behaviour choices throughout the day. He is always ready with the right equipment and focuses on his learning tasks from start to finish.
Baz has grown in confidence and is willing to give new things a go.
Baz is very helpful and often helps without having to be asked. During pack up time, Baz can be spotted tidying his area then going to help others.
You have had a fantastic start to your learning journey Baz. You are a valued member of our class. I look forward to seeing all the achievements you make here at Edendale Primary School.
Keep being you!
Most Valuable Pupil: Team Kereru
The Team Kereru MVP for showing the school value of Haepapa - Responsibility is Chase Chambers.
Chase is a young man who walks into our classroom in the morning, puts his bag away, and gets himself ready for the start of the day.
Since starting this year in Team Kereru, Chase is showing more and more that he is willing to take more responsibility for his learning and he works hard to stay on task and complete his mahi (work) to the best of his ability. He understands that making mistakes is part of learning and he will go back and work to fix something if it is not correct.
Chase always asks if there is anything that he can help with, both during the day and after school. He will often open the gates for a teacher to drive out, and then close them afterwards.
Chase shows responsibility by helping to keep our classroom tidy, during the day, and at the end of the day.
Chase, it is great to see you gaining more confidence in your learning as a Year Five, and we are lucky to have you in our team.
Keep being you!

The Wolf’s Journey Through the Forest
Chapter 1: The Beginning
I was strolling alone through a haunted forest that my worst enemies lived in - the black wolves.
Suddenly I heard the horrible shrieks coming out of their snouts and when I looked up I saw them. A smirk covered their leader's face as she showed her deadly fangs just waiting to take a bite out of my flesh.
I ran for my life howling and barking as I went. I ran and ran, my paws thumped onto the ground, my light blue eyes looked around for any sign of them.
Chapter 2: The Werewolves Strike
It is midnight and I'm out of breath.
Suddenly I smell horrible breath and hear slobbering and growling.
I ran to a tree and hid behind it. I peeped behind the tree and saw strange wolves.
“Oh no!” I should have remembered the werewolves strike at midnight!
I ran! I ran so fast I almost fell off a cliff. Then I noticed something strange about them... they were running on two legs!
My heart was pounding faster and faster. “Oh how did I get myself into so much trouble,” I said.
When the werewolves lost sight of me I knew I was lost and my pack was far away.
The wind gently ruffled my white fur, my blue eyes filled with tears as I thought I was a goner…
