Medina High School Student Council Members Participate in LEAD Spark National Student Council Virtual Conference
LEAD Spark hosted a virtual event on November 20-21, 2020 bringing together and inspiring almost 4,000 National Student Council students and advisors from all over the world to carry out their mission to make a difference in their schools and communities.
Four Medina High School students, junior Bryn Heath, sophomore Delaney Fogle, sophomore Lexi Davis Romine, and freshman Taylor Nicol represented Medina along with Student Council advisor Laura Calaiacovo. Uplifting national motivational speakers talked about continuing to be leaders and motivators even though school may look a little different this year.
“It was great to be able to give the kids something positive and encourage them to keep working together even when Student Council looks a lot different this year. Leadership skills need to continue to be developed and kids can still make a difference in their school and community,’’ stated Calaiacovo.
When asked what she learned from the conference Fogle commented, “As a generation, we adapt faster and can lead better because of our circumstances. We want to make a difference and care a lot about the people around us.’’
Nicol responded, ’’Building resilience is an important skill that we all need to have and COVID-19 is teaching us how to bounce back from difficult situations.’’ Medina High School Student Council hopes to have the opportunity to participate in additional virtual leadership conferences during the course of this school year.
Medina High School Recognized by Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF) as Gold Standard School for Financial Literacy Education
Next Gen Personal Finance (NGPF), a leading non-profit provider of financial education curriculum and teacher professional development, has recognized Medina High School as a Gold Standard School for requiring all students to take at least one semester of personal finance before graduation.
With fewer than 1 in 5 students nationwide (18.3%) receiving this level of access to a comprehensive financial education in high school today, Medina High School is one of just 1,247 NGPF Gold Standard or Future Gold Standard Schools.
Outside of the five states (Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia) that currently require their high school students to take a personal finance class for at least one semester, the responsibility falls on individual schools and school districts like Medina High School to ensure all students take this common-sense course. Outside of these five mandated states, fewer than 1 in 10 high school students (9.3%) are required to take at least one semester of personal finance to graduate. This further highlights Medina High School’s achievement of the Gold Standard.
