A Note from Mrs. Williams
Hello Schluter Families!
It’s been a short, but busy week here at Schluter! Most of our teachers wrapped up parent-teacher conferences this week, and it was amazing to hear about the growth our students are already making this year. Today also marks the end of our first grading period. We are already one-fourth of the way through the year! This means our students are officially settled into the year, and our teachers will really begin ramping up their learning. As the work begins to get more challenging, keep encouraging your kiddos. When something is challenging, that means we are learning! We don’t want things to be out of reach, but we do want our students to learn to be flexible thinkers!
We have a great celebration to share! We have Beat the Bears in our PTA membership drive competition with Berkshire Elementary! Thank YOU for your support in joining our amazing PTA and supporting our school with your donation.
Also, this week we kicked off our Big Kahuna fundraiser! Thank you to all those who have already purchased items to support Schluter!
This weekend is a long one, as Monday is a student holiday. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday, October 11th. Enjoy the long weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Williams
Spelling Bee - 3rd-5th Students
This year’s spelling bee will be done using Scripps National Spelling Bee. The classroom bee
will be an oral test this year held in the classroom the week of October 17th. The top two
winners from each class will go on to compete in the campus bee on December 9th. They will
receive their study guide for the campus bee after the classroom bee is complete. There will not be a study guide for the classroom bee.
The Area Bee will be held on February 10th.
If you have any questions, please contact your campus coordinators.

Let's Talk About Lunch!
Do you know what is included in an elementary and middle school meal? Watch the video and learn more!
You may be surprised how much is available to your student every day for lunch!
Free or reduced-priced meals now require 2022-2023 application
For students who meet federal requirements, school meals may be provided free or at a reduced cost. To receive this benefit, a student's parent or guardian must fill out the free or reduced-cost meal application and be granted admission into the program. While students in the program receive the same benefits briefly at the start of the following school year, the application must be completed annually to continue receiving the program's benefits. For any student who received benefits from the free or reduced-priced meal program in 2021-2022 but has not yet applied and been granted its benefits for the current school year, regular costs are now in effect.
In order for benefits to continue, an application must be completed and returned and free or reduced-price meals will continue to be provided, if the student qualifies. The application can be completed at this link. Paper applications are also available at all Northwest ISD campuses. Please direct any questions to Yen Brown, free and reduced specialist, at 817-698-1091.
Long-Range Planning Committee looking at future facility needs for district
Northwest ISD’s community-led Long-Range Planning Committee has existed for roughly 20 years to help the district plan for its growth. Through meetings this fall and winter, the committee’s members are providing input on future schools and other facilities. Currently, the district projects a likely need for at least one elementary school to open per year, and the committee will also determine how many middle schools are needed in the next few years as well as a time frame for the district’s fourth comprehensive high school. See their meeting progress at www.nisdtxlrpc.org.
Northwest ISD named District of Distinction for Art
Northwest ISD’s visual arts program engages learners of all ages in art education. The district’s students are taught by certified art educators at each grade level. The district will be honored at the TAEA Administration & Supervision Division meeting and General Session during the TAEA Fall Conference General Assembly on Friday, November 10.
Registration now open for annual NISD Reindeer Romp
The event consists of two races, a 5K and 1-mile fun run. The latter race begins at 8:30 a.m., while the longer race begins at 9 a.m. Registration costs $20 per student and $25 per adult. Registrants can take part in either race or both races, if desired.
To register for the Reindeer Romp or learn more about the event, visit www.nisdreindeerromp.com.
Background checks delayed following court backlogs
Please be aware that because of backlogs with court systems, background checks for volunteering are taking additional time to process. While background checks are typically expected to take about three days, the delays are causing them to take up to three weeks.
Northwest ISD partners with a respected service to gather these reports, though our partner can only operate as quickly as the court system. Please keep this in mind when volunteering, and we encourage anyone who plans to volunteer this year to submit a background check immediately instead of waiting.
Asthma resource event being held October 1
Topics that will be discussed include asthma types and severities, tips on how to manage symptoms, and community resources available to families. The event will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, in the Northwest ISD administration building’s PDC A&B rooms. Parking is located next to the building, by the NISD Stadium ticket booth.
Registration for the event is encouraged to assist with planning, but it is not required. Families can register at this link.
