Rāmere Friday 18th November Whiringa-ā-rangi 2022 (T4:W5/8)
Our Tumuaki / Principal
Updates and developments to share with you this week include the following...
Christmas Postie Elf: In Week 7 (starting 28th November) and Week 8 (ending Friday 9th of December) the Christmas Postie Elf delivers children's Christmas Cards to the rooms. It is a great time of giving and receiving. There will be a letterbox outside the staffroom for this.
Southland Athletics: We have a sizable group of children heading to the Southland Athletics tomorrow (Saturday 19th of November). It is very exciting to be part of, where our athletes get to compete against students from across Southland. All the best. Thank you to Miss Laura McVicar for her in-school coordination of this and to Mrs Jenny Coyle and Miss Sarah Botting for being our school support team at the long jump.
Class Swap: At the end of the term, on Thursday 8th December, we have a Class Swap where we bring together the 2023 classes, with their teacher. This is an important day enabling the classroom teacher to welcome her next year's class and for the children to meet each other to build new bonds of friendship and enjoy the existing bonds that they have already.
2023 Term Dates: We are looking into 2023 and how the terms will be structured.
- Term One: Wednesday 1st February to Thursday 6th April (Ten weeks)
- Term Two: Monday 24th April to Friday 30th June (10 Weeks)
- Term Three: Monday 17th July to Friday 22nd September (10 weeks)
- Term Four: Monday 9th October to Wednesday 13th December (10 weeks)
Community of Learning and REAP Extension: Through our Kahui Ako we have been able to organise some extension classes for selected students. We have a group of children heading down to Wyndham next Friday 25th November to extend their knowledge and skills in robotics and they will be doing some coding associated with this.
LMV Zone Swimming Sports: All the best to those students who are heading to the LMV Zone Swimming Sports next Friday 25th November held at Wyndham Primary School swimming pool. Thank you to Miss Sanne den Boon for her coordination of our in-school organisation for this.
- It needs to be done on non-lined paper (as it will be scanned).
- It. needs to be scannable on a photocopier.
- It needs to be an original design, done by hand (not a computer).
- It needs to be based on the theme of Christmas.
- This is open to children enrolled at Edendale Primary School.
- It needs to be in by Friday 25th of November.
Office Upgrade: We are well through our admin upgrade project now and are feeling so much more settled after all the busy-ness that is produced when working in the same environment where things are being changed.
Today was 'Cut the Ribbon' and 'Untie the Bow' day as our two Community of Learning Kahui Ako Learning Support Coordinators (Mrs Tracey Haszard and Mrs Chantelle Brennsell) and Mr McKenzie officially entered their new spaces. Thank you to Tracey Lockhart for the official ceremony proceedings.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we had to work around the variety of workers coming and going associated with this project. At present, the last part of the project, our staffroom carpet, is still waiting to be done and so the staffroom is in the Thomas Brydone Learning Centre.
To Give Away: We have a few items surplus to our requirements that we have put in the bike shed near the west driveway gate. Help yourself.
Acknowledging - Team Edendale
- Caci Mineur: On Monday 21st November Miss Caci Mineur will attend a ceremony at Invercargill's Ascot Park Hotel where she will be formally conferred her full registration as a teacher. Becoming a teacher involves three years of training through a University and then two years of in-school supervision where there is a formalised support programme with a Tutor Teacher (Mrs Hayley Clarke) to guide her through all the things that need to be learnt. Caci has completed this and we are thrilled for her to be able to take the next step in her career.

Most Valuable Pupil - Team Kea
Marcus is Team Kea’s MVP for Ponotanga Integrity. Marcus is a lovely young man who has settled into school life well.
Marcus arrives at school and greets his friends and any adults around with a happy “hello” and a story. He is organised and knows all our routines and expectations and follows them well.
Marcus is a valued Team Kea member as he is kind, reliable and helpful. He is confident in helping new students at school and is a friendly face for them on their school visits.
Marcus learns from his actions and works hard to make positive choices. He has made huge progress in his learning and behaviour and this is from the hard work he puts in. He is happy to try out new things and loves to learn.
I love the way Marcus uses his initiative and does things without being asked. He is trustworthy and honest which has made him a good role model to have in Team Kea.
Marcus I have really enjoyed getting to know you this year. You should be very proud of your learning journey so far. Keep making positive choices and aim high!
Most Valuable Pupil - Team Pukeko
Integrity means our character, and more specifically our actions and behaviours, do not change no matter where we are or who we are with.
Ally has consistently shown throughout the year that she is a young lady who stays true to who she is, and everyone in Team Pukeko knows that Ally is a person we can trust to be honest and sincere at all times.
Ally is an engaged and curious learner who enthusiastically shares her questions, ideas and stories, and who makes the most of every opportunity to learn. She applies herself 100% to every learning activity or experience and has made wonderful progress as a result.
Ally can be trusted to make positive choices both in the classroom and the playground. She will do the right thing even when no one is looking and she encourages others to do the same. Ally is genuinely interested in helping her team-mates and teachers, and will support her friends when they need help or comfort.
Thank you, Ally, for being a fantastic team-member in Team Pukeko this year; I have enjoyed our interactions and conversations and I am sure you will continue to be a fine role-model of all our school values as you move into the senior school.
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” - Dr Seuss
Most Valuable Pupil - Team Kereru
Team Kereru MVP for Ponotanga Integrity is Ida Jukes
Ida is a kind and thoughtful student who will help others when help is needed. She won’t think twice about stopping what she is doing to support others.
Showing integrity is about being honest when no one is looking. I can trust that Ida will be doing what she is supposed to be doing, no matter who is in the room.
Ida is a quietly determined student who puts her heart into everything she does, whether it be running, a game, or her schoolwork.
Ida respects the school values, teachers and peers around the school. She is a great role model to younger students joining the school. I love how Ida has been able to extend herself and take on new challenges.
It has been lovely to have you in Team Kereru this year, Ida, and I know you will continue to be a model student as a Year 6 next year. Keep up the awesome work!

Our Team for this Week - Team Kahu
Kia Ora,
As usual, Term Four is flying by! The term has been jam-packed with events, with many more major events to come.
Our final term has been a busy one. Students have taken part in LMV Athletics, Sports Activator sessions, Pet Day, Swimming, Bush School, and today they are having their New Entrant Discovery Day at Menzies College. Moreover, students have been continuing with their usual learning activities and completing assessments for final reporting. As the term continues, students are also preparing for the end-of-year concert and for their Year Six Farewell.
Our DRIVE inquiry is based on ‘Being Historians’ and students have chosen to explore a range of historical events. After researching their chosen event, students have written their own historical narrative or report. A big part of their learning inquiry this term has been showing student agency and directing their own learning. Students were allowed to choose how they wanted to share their learning and knowledge of the historical event they researched.
We are continuing to work on our PRIME math books and developing our number knowledge. Students have shown great progress in their math and are well set up for entering Year Seven next year.
Team Kahu has been lucky enough to have Mrs Aleisha Schrader teaching them every Thursday. During this term, students have been creating their own soft toys. Thank you to our parent helpers for supporting this and giving up their time to lend a hand.
Our Year Sixes are major contributors to the life of our school; staff especially enjoy and appreciate having seen these students grow, progress and mature through their time with us. For all nineteen of them, it is their final three weeks of attending Edendale Primary School. We want it to be a memorable time and for them to finish strong as they continue to display our school values of respect, responsibility, excellence and integrity. Ending well, on a high, is so wonderful.
All the best,
Miss den Boon,
Teacher Team Kahu
