December 1, 2023
WEbster Nation,
December has arrived! There's a chill in the air and it seems there's an abundance of baked goods floating around already. Love it. With only three weeks left before the break, there's a ton going on here at Webster and we don't want you to miss a thing. Please pay extra attention to our calendar and to your inbox as we will make sure you are aware of all things Webster this month. Thanks so much for all you do to support our students and staff. We are truly grateful.
With gratitude,

Miss Papale's TK
TK exuberantly engineered kites for their letter Kk week! We planned, built, replanned, optimized, and flew! It was so fun to zoom around our play yard jumping and giggling! Another wonderful week of thinking critically and living imaginatively with some of our littlest learners! Lots of love from TK.
Mrs. Berman and Mrs. Murdock's Kindergarten
The Bu Crew has been busy working in cooperative learning teams to research and create presentation boards about different marine animals for our aquarium and research facility. It has been a wonderful learning experience both socially and academically. The students are learning to share, adjust, adapt, and thrive in their groups. They have also been living imaginatively while creating many marine animals for the Bu Crew aquarium exhibits.

Focus on your Breath to Relax
Megan Bell, Lolo's mom, who is also the Director of Consumer and Mental Health at Google, visited us today. She taught us about how to take care of our mental health. We learned more about how to focus on our breath to relax. Plus, we got to share how we feel to each other. We read In my Heart by Jo Witek to help us identify our feelings. It was fun practicing Sesame mindful poses as another way to relax. Lastly, the students loved making stress balls with her.
Mrs. Harris's 1st & 2nd Grade
Ms. Lockwood's 2nd Grade
In the STEAM Lab we used our Quest Book to engineer different enclosures and buildings within a zoo space. Collaboration and Critical Thinking were on full display with the partners as they built a space for employees to relax and eat, a path for zebras to run, and even a bridge where people could walk over and animals could walk under.
Mrs. Stark's 3rd Grade
Non-fiction has been the recent theme in room 8. We have been learning that reading an expository non-fiction book is different than reading narrative non-fiction or fiction books. While reading we've been taking notes and sharing our learning with our friends. We've even made sketch notes to illustrate our learning. We are learning and teaching all the time.
Mr. K's 3rd & 4th Grade
Room 17 crushing some multiplication and division.
Ms. Johnson's 5th Grade
Hello Room 20 Community!
This week we learned that similes were as exciting as a roller coaster ;). It's awesome to use vibrant language! This week we also had a fantastic math lesson on interpreting remainders in division and I personally loved it! We also finally got to choose our book club groups, which means we get to start having book club meetings next week! YAY! I cannot wait to meet with my groups and get to hear about some awesome books people are reading. And finally, in Social Studies we have wrapping up our lesson on the Southeast region of the United States. I cannot wait to see my studying shine! Well room 20 community, this is my final entry as your news reporter. So for the last time this month, here is Room 20’s Question of the Week:
What are your favorite holiday traditions?
“My favorite holiday day tradition is wearing matching pj’s with my family on Christmas Eve and having a White Elephant gift exchange! It gets crazy!” - Miss Johnson
“Every Christmas Eve my brother and I get to open 1 present and that is my favorite tradition” - Grace G.
“ That would probably have to be opening presents on Christmas day! It’s so exciting.” - Alex P.
Room 20’s Star Author This Month: Andy Kessler
Mrs. London's 5th Grade
This week we continued with our Deep Learning Project where students are working in groups to develop their own states. So far, the groups have explored the topics of topography, natural resources and energy, and climate. On Thursday, students explored the concept of government. They were challenged to build the tallest, strongest, and most interesting straw towers they could create in 10 minutes. The catch - each group had to operate as if they were a particular type of government. Some groups had one person in charge calling all the shots, and that person could choose whether or not they wanted to hear the ideas of the other citizens in their group. Other groups had to discuss and vote on every single step before they proceeded. And another group had no leader at all. Instead, each person could do whatever they wanted. Almost immediately students started developing opinions on which types of government seemed to be the most efficient and which seemed to be the most fair. The groups were also very quick to determine what they liked and didn’t like about their particular type of government and why. Some wonderful observations were made about how the number of people or the task at hand might influence/change what type of government might be the best fit. As the students learn more about the different types of governments, groups will ultimately determine what kind of government they think would work best for their particular plot of land. It will be interesting to see what kinds of governments emerge in Room 19!
MAKING GOOD IN OUR COMMUNITY
Prior to Thanksgiving, our Webster community snapped into action to help raise resources for members of our community. Webster families, the PTA, and the Malibu Cub Scouts came together to bring shaving cream and clean wipes to the Malibu Community Assistance Resource Team. Webster's own, Chord Mlodzik, was on hand to deliver the goods with some love and a smile. Chord is also a member of the Malibu Cub Scouts.
In addition to these donations, placemats made by Miss Papale’s and Mrs. Harris's classes were donated to the Malibu Community Labor Exchange for their annual community Thanksgiving meal.
Well done, Webster!!
WEBSTER CHOIR MEMBERS AT JAMS
Led by Ms. Justin, a handful of our 5th grade choir members represented Webster at the Fall Choral Festival at JAMS this week. Special shout outs to Alex, Lila, Emilia, Moral, and Joella!! Thanks for your dedication and participation!
A TRULY RIBBETING WEEK
I have always been a believer that great ideas inspire others to great things. Well, Ms. Lockwood's Great Duck Mystery of 2023 has inspired the Next Frogtier! Someone, or a group of people, descended upon Webster in the dim light of the rising sun on Monday morning and painted the campus with tiny, green frogs. They have already sparked wonder and brought delight to those who have now begun to collect these cute little creatures. We know not who or why or how, but once again, we are enjoying the mystery of the sky raining frogs down upon us. Whoever you are, keep it up!
MAKING GOOD OBSERVATIONS
Sometimes a short greeting is more than it seems. For several days, when greeting students, I would ask, "What's the word?" Most of them, being the sweet kiddos they are, responded with things like, "kindness," "love," and "community." While extremely touched by these offerings, I was looking for them to actually find the word of the week. I had written it on the little sign that sits in my office window. Clear as day it read, "The word is RHUBARB." It took a while, but when the kids started to realize this was an actual thing, they went searching for the word. Chandler Dunn finally found it and therefore became the first student in the Word of the Week Club. I wonder who will find next week's word?
STAFF WELLNESS RETREAT
On behalf of our staff, I want to extend a huge thank you to Hannah Grasso and her incredible team over at Saje Natural Wellness. They hosted us today for an afternoon of relaxation and rejuvenation. Webster's staff was treated to a delightful experience with meditation, massage, aroma therapy, acupuncture and so much more. We are so grateful for the opportunity and the care. Webster's staff is one of the most hard-working and dedicated group of people I have known in education. Afternoon's like these are well-deserved and we are so appreciative of Hannah and her team wanting to give back. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon.
DEEP LEARNING EXPO?
What is it exactly that we are celebrating at our Fall Deep Learning EXPO? Do you remember your childhood Science Fair? While many students certainly did their own work, conducted their own experiments, and should be proud of their efforts, far too often these events celebrated the wrong thing. They were driven by the perfection of the final product. On the day of exhibition, many students stood next to some unbelievable project with which they had little or nothing to do. Mom and dad were often the architects of these products because they knew it would be a big part of their child's grade that semester and they wanted them to look good in front of the rest of the school. Most students had a canned speech and rattled off a list of things they had prepared the night before. You remember?
Well...our EXPO IS NOT THAT.
It is instead a celebration of the process of inquiry and learning. It is an authentic opportunity for our students to discuss their struggles as well as their successes. It's a chance to highlight their curiosity and wonder and communicate to all of you the thinking and learning that came to light along the way. They are not receiving grades for these projects. Rather, they have received and will continue to receive formative feedback. In addition, they are developing the ability to provide constructive feedback to others. Will there be some imperfect results, some unfinished projects? Boy, I certainly hope so. Failure and discomfort are the most optimum places for growth...so long as students haven't learned to be terrified of them. We're all going to make mistakes and experience challenges along the path to design and collaboration. Let's teach kids to learn, improve, and grow from these experiences.
This is only our second attempt at this as a staff as well. Are there places where we can learn and grow and improve? For sure...and we will do exactly that in the months to come. But keep in mind that if we expect our students to take risks, try things, rise to challenges, and express creativity, then this process must become a foundation of our school culture for the adults as well. We must all participate and commit to the process of ideation, design, and reflection.
At Webster, we're going to take big swings, give kids real things to think about, real problems to solve, and challenge our staff to do the same. We're going to try things and reflect on the outcomes and be committed to growth mindsets. This is what the world is screaming for from our staff and students. So...when you come for our EXPO on December 15, @ 9:00am, you are coming to witness the continuance of something different...a more authentic exploration of learning. We are beyond excited to have you join us.
WE'RE BACK!!

WAIT UNTIL 8TH
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over the kids having a smartphone. Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
Top 5 Reasons To Delay Getting a Smartphone
1 Smartphones are changing childhood.
2 They are distracting and addicting.
3 Smartphones expose your child to...
4 They increase risk for anxiety and depression.
5 Cyberbullying is an important concern.

Developing strong character and valuable mindsets is essential. This remains a major focus at Webster. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity, kindness, and thoughtful problem solving. In addition, we will value these traits in others and recognize outstanding efforts.
Every Friday we sport our Webster Wear to show school spirit and celebrate the coming weekend. Classes with the highest percentage of Webster Wear win the whale for the week. Be sure to show your spirit and pick up some Webster Wear in the main office when you stop in to say hello.
