At Loma Vista we believe that all students will learn at high levels and achieve personal success in a safe and positive environment.

• • Do not block the back gate staff driveway.
  • Please remember the loop is a drop off zone please do not park.
  • Once the gate opens at 7:35am students may get off car.
  • Please drive slowly in the drive way and make sure to go with the flow of traffic.
  • Students should be ready to exit the door from the passenger side.
  • Make sure students have all items ready by the time you get to the top of the dropoff zone.
  • Parents should remain in the cars. If your child is having trouble exiting quickly please use our walking option.
  • Be cautious of pedestrians and stay in the line.
  • Use the closest pedestrian entrance if you are walking.
  • Always pull forward as much as possible so we can get as many cars in the drop off zone.
  • Make sure not to get in line before your time.

  • Grade 1-3 2:15pm
  • Grades 4-6 2:30pm

Please remember that if you have a concern with your child and or an incident in class or on the playground please always contact the teacher first via parent square. I am not in each class everyday and the teacher may have more information than the principal. Teachers will typically respond at the end of the day. Remember they are teaching during the day and may not always check parent square immediately.

Mark your calendar! School picture day is Thursday September 29th. Pictures will be taken of all students but will only be printed for those that prepay. Please use the Lifetouch envelope that will be sent home. Checks or exact cash can be put in the envelope. The school does not have change available. Please remember that attendance is key to a child's success. While we understand that students may get sick it is very important that each day your child is absent you need to call the office to let us know the reason. Please remember to call the office at 562-941-4712. You can also send a message to sornelas@swhittier.net or tmelgoza@swhittier.net

Remember that if a student is absent 18 or more days they will be considered chronically absent. During illness please remember the guidelines below.

The gates open at 7:35am. Classroom doors open at 7:50am. Students need to be in their seat at 8:00am. Students may be getting dropped off before 8:00am but are not making to their classroom on time. We also have a back gate on Leland for those who may live behind Loma Vista

All students enrolled in Boys and Girls Club must report daily to the program. We can not send them to a different location.

Sadly we will need to postpone family movie night until after ASB elections and once the weather cools down a bit. More information to follow.

Please make sure students are bringing water bottles for the day. Our water fountains are off due to health restrictions but we do have water bottle filling stations. Also please avoid dropping off items to the office. We need to value classroom instruction and classrooms will not be interrupted during the day.

Please help us at home by using these same words and expectations at home. This will build a consistency to teaching our PAWS expectations.

At Loma Vista we have many opportunities for parents to be involved. We have a school site council that meets 4-5 times a year. For any parent that is a parent of English Language Learner we have ELAC meetings 4-5 times a year. These meetings will be held during coffee with the principal. If you are interested please fill out the information form that was sent home with your student last week.

Would you like to celebrate your child's birthday by having them acknowledged on our school marquee? Your child's name will appear on the marquee for their birthday month. This is an ASB fundraiser. Please send your child's name and birthday along with $5.00 cash in an envelope to the school office.

Please make sure you download the parent square app. This will be the only way we send home school and district communication.

If your child has been absent they can attend Saturday Attendance Recovery. Please make sure you pre-register. Our first Saturday school is September 9th.

What is Empathy?

Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.

Why Focus on Empathy?

• Empathy builds positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
• Empathy strengthens community. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students and adults at school, and at home.
• Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.

Empathy In Action:

• Take a different perspective. When you take a different perspective, you put aside your own feelings and reactions to see the situation through another’s eyes.
• Put aside judgment. Take a pause and rather than express conclusions about a situation based on what you see, step back and consider other things you may still need to know or understand.
• Communicate that you understand. Instead of giving advice, respond with reflective phrases like, “It sounds like you...” or “I hear that you...” to express that you understand and care.
