Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
February 23, 2024
Along with Victory Villa Elementary, our third through fifth grade students attended the dress rehearsal of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts' Black History Month Assembly on Thursday. Students enjoyed performances by Patapsco's Step Squad, Gospel Choir, Jazz Band, Dancers, Vocalists, and more. Students in Grades K-2 enjoyed a virtual Black History Month children's festival from Arts for Learning Maryland, which celebrated Maryland Black History and Culture. This is our third year attending the Patapsco assembly, which importantly centers Black culture, art, and celebration, but also exposes students to a school and pathway where their interests and passions may be further fostered. On the way out and back at school, I had many conversations with students considering how a school for the arts might be an option for them in the future.
This week was also Kids Heart Challenge celebration week. We are celebrating Lutherville Lab students raising over $5,600 this year! Thank you to Mr. Bruns and all our participating students and families for their efforts.
Important Reminder: The BCPS Climate Survey is open and available for community input. This year's survey is more condensed and will take only a few minutes to complete. The input of our families is vital to us, so we greatly appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete the survey.
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb

Hour of Power - Great News!
With Winter MAP testing nearing completion, we are able to look at the instructional areas we've been targeting through the Hour of Power and see if this program, in concert with the daily instruction and efforts of our staff, is making an impact on our students.
In looking at our 3rd grade students, ~80% of students saw gains in one of the two following measures, or both:
- Overall National Percentile rank in Mathematics from Fall to Winter (so, outgrowing their peers, nationally)
- Increased achievement band in either Operations & Algebraic Thinking, or Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (the two skill areas we targeted). This would be, for example, a student moving from Average to High Average, or Low to Low Average in one of those categories.
This is remarkable progress, and made possible by the efforts of our teaching staff, parent and community volunteers who helped us make materials or support students in session (or donated snacks), and Goucher and Loyola partners who also helped facilitate student learning.
This is a true example of the entirety of our school community coming together to improve our efforts to serve students, and warrants real celebration. I don't know of any other school taking this kind of innovative, collaborative approach in Baltimore County. Kudos to all involved!!
We will be running data for additional grade levels and continuing to reflect and refine the program, which runs until Spring Break.
