Meet Orion Americorps Volunteer Malika Franklin
Honoring Doctor Martin Luther Kind - A Day of Service January 16, 2023
Each year communities all across the country recognize the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. A federal holiday that began as a commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday, it is now a day dedicated to encouraging and empowering Americans to participate in community service.
Dr. King’s steadfast commitment to service has inspired people all around the United States and the world to work together to make positive change.
At Orion Alternative School we have two young adults serving our community in the same spirit.
Malika Frankin is an Americorps Volunteer working directly with our students every day.
Seth Skye Americorps Volunteer at Orion
My name is Seth Skye, I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I was introduced to gardening at a young age and quickly fell in love with every aspect of gardening from getting my hands in the soil to enjoying the fruits of my own labor. Learning about and exploring the natural world through science led me to graduate from Oregon State University in 2021, where I received two degrees in Natural Resources and Sustainability with a focus in sustainable land management. I chose to become an AmeriCorps volunteer because I was intrigued in having the opportunity to share my passion for gardening and my love for science.

Principal Campus Advisory-Monday, January 23 at 3:30
What is the Principal Campus Advisory?
Last school year we started a series of community dialogues to develop a positive school culture at Orion Alternative School with two unique and innovative programs. The team is comprised of parents and staff from both programs that have volunteered to come together for the purpose of developing goals that support each program in order to thrive and grow in the same space.
The three areas the committee is committed to are:
Identifying and developing: shared traditions, shared spaces on campus, and school year-long programming.
There is a vacancy on this committee for a parent from the Parent Cooperative program.
We meet one Monday a month at 3:30 pm.
Our first meeting for the school year is on January 23 via zoom. Please reach out to Principal Katherine Rivera at krivera@rcsdk8.net.
