Principals' Greeting
Hiteon Community,
Happy New Year!
We hope you and those you love found rest and time to spend together over winter break. As students returned to school on Tuesday, staff spent time revisiting expectations and routines after welcoming the students to the 2023 year. The stretch of time between winter break and spring break is a period of tremendous learning and growth for students. We look forward to continuing our partnership with families in supporting all student learning needs. Our first grading period will come to an end during the first week of February, however, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher should you have questions or concerns about learning goals and progress.
This month we have some exciting events at Hiteon! We hope everyone will consider putting our movie night on the calendar (January 27th) as well as consider attending the PTC/Principals Chat on January 19th. We are trying something new this month with our Principals Chat. We will have an in-person Principals Chat the half-hour before the PTC meeting. We will meet in the same room as the PTC meeting which is in the classroom closest to Davies (look for signs outside on the 19th. We also have a parent event to support our BSD Clothes for Kids. Parents are being asked to support this outreach by volunteering to sort and hang up clothes donated by our community at the Clothes for Kids location (16550 SW Merlo Road, Beaverton). Popcorn Friday, OBOB, and our Dine-out Fundraiser are also happening this month. Information about all of these events are in this newsletter.
We have waited a LONG time to get the chance to be together as a community and we are taking every opportunity we can to gather once again!
We are looking forward to seeing you!
Best Regards,
Janet Maza, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie - Assistant Principal

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:45 - Doors open & Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
According to BSD policy absences that are not medical in nature, such as vacations, will be marked as unexcused absence.
Tardy: School begins promptly at 8:00am. Students that are not seated at their desk at 8:00am are considered tardy. Unless they are in the cafeteria having breakfast. Unfortunately, this means that students that are in vehicles in the parking lot are still considered late if they enter the building at 8:01am.
Early Arrival: For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school before 7:45am there is no adult supervision prior to 7:45.
Dismissal: Again, for student safety, all students must be picked up from school at dismissal time 2:35pm. There is no supervision after 2:35. Unless the student is involved in a supervised after-school activity. Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35pm must have parent supervision.

Is your child too sick for school
We would like to remind parents about our guidelines for determining whether or not a student should come to school if they're ill. Please remember to visit our COVID-19 Protocols Information and Too Sick for School webpage for information about when to keep kids home from school.
If a student becomes ill during the school day, the student must go to the school's health room to be evaluated and then signed out by a parent/guardian. Students should not use their personal devices to communicate illness with parents directly. Please remind your students to inform their teacher and to visit the health room.

Resolve to be More Active
Welcome back to school! January is a perfect time to try walking or biking to school -- for your health, your community, and the planet! 1 mile of walking each way to school equals 2/3 of the daily recommended 60 minutes of physical activity. Get your steps in while decreasing the traffic and air pollution around your school and neighborhood.
- Does your school have a walking or biking school bus? If so, join in the fun. If not, find your school's preferred walk/bike route on our interactive Safe Routes to School maps. Elementary School Maps, Middle School Maps, High School Maps
- When you're out and about, keep your EYES and EARS OPEN, phones down and heads up. Know what’s going on around you. Have fun with your active commute!

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When we have inclement weather, school schedules could be affected. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the district website, ParentSquare and social media by 5:30 a.m. The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability of parents and students to drive safely, and the ability of students to walk safely. Decisions are made for the entire District. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.
For the latest inclement weather information:
● Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations.
● The BSD Public Safety webpage has information about inclement weather procedures and
snow routes. Log on and click “Inclement Weather Information.”
● Follow us on:
o Twitter @BeavertonSD
o Facebook @BeavertonSchoolDistrict
o Instagram @beavertonsd
● Tune into media outlets for updates.
