Principals' Greeting
Hiteon Community,
It has been a great start to the year! Our students are settling into their classrooms, and the weather for outdoor activities has been outstanding! We have had multiple opportunities to meet many of our community members, including volunteer orientations, the PTC community meeting, and Curriculum Night. The focus on bringing back the magic of having our community being a part of our school is evident in the excellent attendance for these events!
Another opportunity to connect as a community is tomorrow at Hiteon’s Service-Learning event. Families will gather at Hiteon at 9:30 AM to help make Hiteon sparkle on the outside by pulling weeds, helping in the garden, taking down cobwebs, etc. This is an excellent opportunity to meet others while helping out our school!
If you love to walk outside in the morning to enjoy the autumn air, we would like to invite you to Hiteon’s International Walk and Roll to School Day! In this newsletter, there is more information about this event and how you can meet and enjoy a walk to school with your students and our Hiteon community.
Another great opportunity to come together as a community is on October 21st at our Trunk or Treat event. Information how to attend can be found on the PTC website found here.
As we return to pre-pandemic community involvement, we want you to know that you have been missed and that we cannot wait to see you at Hiteon to support our students and the Hiteon community.
We look forward to your involvement with our school! Welcome Back!!
Best Regards,
Janet Maza, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie - Assistant Principal

The Importance of ATTENDANCE
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:45 – Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
Classroom instruction begins promptly at 8:00 am. Students are expected to be at school and on time every day that they are healthy. Additionally, we appreciate your efforts to schedule appointments after school hours.
We also appreciate your efforts to make sure students enter the school building no earlier than 7:45 am and no later than 7:55 am. Arriving by 7:55 am allows students to calmly report to class and settle before the school day begins at 8:00 am.
ABSENCES
If your child will be absent or arriving late, please call the school’s attendance line at
(503) 356-2141, and leave a message regarding that absence or fill out the Hiteon Attendance Notification Form. Messages may be left in the attendance voice mailbox 24 hours a day. Please call before 8:15 a.m. on the day of the absence. If it is not possible to report the absence before 8:15 a.m., please call the school office, at 503-356-2140. If a student’s parent does not call or fill out the Attendance Notification Form to report an absence or tardy, a courtesy call will be made to the student’s home to determine the reason for the student not being in school.
24-HOUR ATTENDANCE PHONE NUMBER 503 256-2141or Hiteon Attendance Notification Form
SUPERVISION
For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school prior to supervision (7:45) and must not remain after supervision hours (2:35) unless they are involved in a supervised after-school activity.
Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35 PM must have parent supervision.
ATTENDANCE MONITORING
Teachers and the principal will monitor student attendance. The parents of students with excessive absences or tardies will receive written communication from the principal, alerting them to the problem. We will be following ORS 339.065, which states:
Eight unexcused one-half day absences in any four-week period during which the school is in session shall be considered irregular attendance. Students who meet these criteria will be reported to ODE as truant. Excused absences are not to exceed five days in a term of three months or not to exceed ten days in any term of at least six months.

Recess Expectations
We want all our students to have a fun and safe recess experience. To achieve this goal, we had Beaverton School District Risk Management come and observe our recess to provide us with recommendations. Some recommendations included students not running on the bark chips or big toy. Students can still run on the grass fields. Unfortunately, all the running on the bark chips has resulted in minor injuries daily. We ask that you talk with your child(ren) about these new expectations and that they are in place to keep everyone safe.
Thank you all for your support.

International Walk + Roll to School Day on Wed 10/12
On October 12, 2022, join people from around the world as we celebrate International Walk + Roll to School Day. Walk, bike, scooter, skate, roll, bus, or carpool to school and be entered to win fun prizes.
The grand prize winner will earn a new scooter with a helmet! Walking and rolling to school is great for kids, our community, and our planet. Here are the top five reasons:
1. Fewer vehicles driving to school reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions near schools and in our parking lots.
2. More people walking and rolling builds school community and makes routes safer.
3. Physical activity boosts kids’ readiness to learn and improves their physical and mental health.
4. Kids have fun with friends and bond with families while walking and rolling together.
5. Being outside builds independence and lifelong transportation skills.

2022 - 2023 BSD Meal Program
This year, the Beaverton School District is sending mail notifications to families who qualify for free or reduced-cost meals, either through Federal Income Guidelines or the new Oregon Expanded Income Guidelines (EIG).
We want to clarify that students who qualify for free or reduced-cost meals under the Federal Income Guidelines may receive additional benefits. Those benefits include:
Waived or reduced athletic fees
Waived or reduced school event fees
Medical, dental and vision benefits
Low-cost internet service through Comcast Internet Essentials
Waived or reduced THPRD fees
However, students who qualify for free meals under EIG are not eligible for additional benefits. Oregon EIG approval is for free school meals only.
Please refer to the Nutrition Services Meal Benefits page to view the income guidelines and other information.
