News for December 15, 2023
Brimhall Families,
We launched a school wide initiative on Wednesday called Brimhall Kindness 101. It is aimed at sharing stories of empathy, kindness, gratitude, compassion, and inclusion - all components that make Brimhall one of the best learning environments around and is modeled after Steve Hartman’s Kindness 101 work on CBS News. Every Wednesday, your child’s classroom will watch a video emphasizing an element of kindness and reflect about it during their morning circle.
Each week’s Brimhall Buzz will contain a link to the video and our circle prompts. I encourage you to watch the videos at home and keep the conversation going. There is so much good in our world but we can sometimes lose sight of it because of how hectic our daily lives can become. This is an intentional approach to slow down, see the beauty in each other, and to spread kindness across our community.
This week’s theme was about empathy and is grounded in a question we can all ask ourselves: What if that was me? You can watch the video by clicking here.
Kindergarten through grade two watched from the beginning to minute 8:43. Their circle prompts were:
What does having empathy look, sound, or feel like to you?
Why do you think it is important to have empathy, or to understand the feelings of others?
Is there a time when you have shown empathy or someone has empathized with you?
Third through sixth grade watched from the beginning to minute 1:50 and from minute 8:43 to 19:23. The circle prompts for these older grades were:
Why do you think it is important to have empathy, or to understand the feelings of others?
What does it mean to feel guilty? What can you do with those feelings?
What can happen in a community when empathy is shown? What can happen in a community when empathy is not shown?
This work will help our community continue to thrive and grow. I already felt the ripple effect this morning when a third grader stopped me with her family before school and shared how she showed empathy to another friend, “Just like we talked about on Wednesday!”
Thank you for joining us on this Brimhall Kindness 101 journey and do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or comments.
Thank you,
Ryan Vernosh

Dismissal Procedures
CHANGES TO YOUR CHILD’S DISMISSAL ROUTINE
Any changes to your child’s dismissal routine MUST be communicated to the school by 1:30pm. This is important. It will allow us to make sure that your child is where they need to be at dismissal.
CONTACTING THE SCHOOL
If you call to talk to your teacher during school hours, you will be transferred to their voicemail. Please leave a message for your child’s teacher and they will get back to you within 24 hours. We are doing everything we can to create a distraction free learning environment to allow our staff and students to focus on learning and teaching. If there is urgent information that a teacher needs to know, you can give that information to our front office staff and we will pass the message on.
