UCFSD's Katie Connolly Competes in National Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Katie Connolly, an eighth grader at Charles F. Patton Middle School, on making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee Semifinals earlier this month! We are so proud of your achievement at the national level!
Prior to competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Katie took first place as Chester County’s top speller in the Chester County Spelling Bee on Monday, February 7, 2022. Winning with the word “antenatus” (A-N-T-E-N-A-T-U-S) allowed Katie to move onto compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Each participant in the Chester County Spelling Bee earned the invitation to compete by winning their individual school's spelling bee which Katie had won earlier this year. Students prepared for the county competition by studying Scripps-provided word lists and practicing at home.
Connolly said that reading was key to her success: "I have always enjoyed reading and spend a lot of my spare time reading. That has really helped with spelling."
Unionville-Chadds Ford School District's Music Education Program Receives National Recognition
Unionville-Chadds Ford School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Now in its 23rd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Unionville-Chadds Ford School District answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious designation from the NAMM Foundation,” stated Dr. John Sanville, Superintendent. “ Our teachers are some of the best and have created programs at each of our schools and at every level that provide exceptional musical opportunities to learn and perform. Our students have earned several musical accolades for their talents and student involvement in our music programs overall has never been greater! This can only be attributed to our passionate teachers and their work to provide a meaningful and quality music program at UCFSD.”
Since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015 and a stated emphasis on a well-rounded education, many school districts have re-committed to music and arts education programs. During the pandemic, music and arts programs were a vital component to keeping students engaged in school. ESSA provides designated funding for well-rounded educational opportunities through Title IV Part A Student Academic Success and Achievement grants. NAMM Foundation research has revealed that these grants are being widely used by school districts to address instructional gaps in access to music and arts education.
Madeleine Day, a junior involved in the music program at Unionville High School shared, “To me, music education is incredibly important because it exposes students to music early on so that they can develop a well rounded education. Students in our district are given the opportunity to express themselves creatively and build their self esteem through something they are passionate about. At a young age in elementary school we were exposed to numerous instruments and singing styles. This helped my appreciation and love for music grow. I am eternally grateful for our district's music department and it has truly changed my life.”
Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music: After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school, but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to: perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound: young adults and even older adults who have not played an instrument for up to 50 years show enhanced neural processing compared to their peers. Not to mention, social benefits include conflict resolution, teamwork skills, and how to give and receive constructive criticism.
“Students have an innumerable amount of experiences if they pursue music,” stated Mr. Eddie Otto, Unionville High School Band Director. “There are studies that show test scores improve with participation in ensembles, that music is one of the only subjects that engages both sides of the brain at a high level, or that participation in music helps to get into college, but music can be so much more than that to a person. Students may find a lifelong passion, friendships and memories in the pursuit of music. They develop leadership, a mature work ethic, social skills, time management skills, teamwork skills, etc. the list goes on and on. There is no bench in music and every part is equally important. Every participant is equally important and students experience the performance and emotions of music while also providing it for an audience. That is pretty indescribable and I am incredibly lucky to be able to be a small part of that experience for our kids at Unionville-Chadds Ford.”
Chief Coker Visits Unionville High School
Chief Coker of the Lenape Indian Tribe visited Unionville High School to speak with students about his culture and its history. He told stories of the different clans in the tribe and what they were each known for. He also shared information about native plants that were important to his people and what they were used for.
Students asked questions about how they specifically can honor the history of the Lenape Tribe. Chief Coker encouraged students to be more aware of the land around them and take steps to improve how we care for our land such as using more local products and resources and taking the time to appreciate and connect with nature.
This visit is part of a project that the district has been working on in partnership with Longwood Gardens to follow through on our commitment to honor the Lenape in respectful ways. The goal is to work with Longwood to create indigenous gardens that our students can learn from and that will honor the history of the Lenape in our community.

This field is the culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication and marks the beginning of a new and improved future for our softball program, giving our student-athletes and coaches a beautiful home on which to play and compete!
Museum Day at Patton Middle School
Patton Middle School held their Museum Day on March 25, which showcased all of the hard work 7th-grade students put into their Non-Fiction Writing projects over the course of the 3rd marking period!
This project started with students self-selecting their topics. From there, students created research questions for each level of Bloom’s Taxonomy, conducted research to answer their questions, and created original artifacts.
Families, staff, and fellow students got to attend and learn more about featured topics!
UES Teacher Honored with Citadel Heart of Learning Award
The Unionville Chadds-Ford School District is pleased to announce that Mrs. Dawn Oldenski from Unionville Elementary has been selected as the district’s recipient of the Citadel Heart of Learning Award.
This award was developed by Citadel and the Chester County Intermediate Unit 18 years ago to recognize and reward, but mostly thank, the outstanding teachers in Chester County. The Citadel Heart of Learning Award recipients are selected based on the following criteria: (1) consistent devotion of time and energy beyond the normal requirements of their teaching position (2) initiating, implementing, or administering a new or innovative idea that benefits their students and/or school and (3) providing exceptional assistance and/or support to school or student activities, projects, or programs.
Parents, students, and colleagues were able to nominate teachers earlier in the school year, and Ms. Oldenski received four nominations. She is one of 15 winners selected out of more than 1,400 nominees submitted this year.
In addition to the award, Mrs. Oldenski received $500 that can be used to purchase supplies and other items needed for the classroom, as well as an invitation to the Citadel Heart of Learning banquet on May 2, 2022.
The banquet was held at the Mann Center in Philadelphia, where Mrs. Oldenski and her guests we treated to a celebratory dinner and award presentation. Mrs. Oldenski received her hand-crafted glass award on stage in front of friends, family and colleagues.
As part of their nominations, a parent shared why Ms. Oldenski is deserving of this honor.
“Mrs. Oldenski goes out of her way to hear and recognize the struggles the kids have, whether it be sitting at a desk, social interaction, self-esteem issues or academic struggles, and she actions a caring, kind, and fair plan to meet the kids where they are. As a parent of a special needs child herself, dawn recognizes the challenges some kids face in school as well as at home, and facilities learning in such a way as to excite and engage kids rather than beating them down with mundane repetition or punitive homework drills. I have never had a teacher go so out of her way to make all her students feel valued, capable, worthwhile and she does so while making school fun. She is stellar. We need more teachers like dawn Oldenski!”
