A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
I hope this message finds you well and looking forward to spending quality time together as a family. As we approach the upcoming stat day, I wanted to remind you of our school's observance of Family Day on February 19th, during which students will not be in attendance.
Family Day is a wonderful opportunity for families to bond, create memories, and engage in activities that strengthen the familial bond. Whether you plan to explore the outdoors, enjoy a cozy day indoors, or participate in community events, we encourage you to make the most of this special day.
We hope you have a fantastic time celebrating Family Day and making cherished memories with your loved ones. Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Future Chemist
The Chemistry Club at Ladysmith Secondary recently welcomed grade 4 students to participate in a series of thrilling chemistry experiments. Organized and led by Karmyn Powell (LSS Teacher), the event aimed to ignite a passion for science among the younger generation.
The collaboration between the Chemistry Club and the grade 4 students proved to be a resounding success, as budding scientists eagerly delved into the world of chemical reactions and molecular structures. Under the guidance of passionate mentors, the young participants conducted experiments that ranged from colorful reactions to mesmerizing chemical transformations..
"I never knew science could be this much fun!" exclaimed one enthusiastic participant. "I want to be a chemist when I grow up!"
The Chemistry Club's initiative not only provided an opportunity for hands-on learning but also emphasized the importance of community outreach and mentorship. By involving older students in the teaching process, the club not only enriched the educational experience for the grade 4 students but also empowered its members to become leaders in science education.
As the day drew to a close, it was evident that the Chemistry Club's efforts had made a lasting impact on the grade 4 students. With newfound excitement and curiosity, they departed, eager to continue their scientific exploration. With initiatives like these, it's clear that the future holds great promise for the next generation of chemists.

Join us as we continue to celebrate Black History Month!
Meet Eleanor Collins! As Vancouver's "First Lady of Jazz," Eleanor was the first Canadian woman to have her own national television show: CBC TV's The Eleanor Show (1955) and Eleanor (1964). She championed the values of equality and acceptance and is considered a civic leader and pioneer in the development of British Columbia's music industry.

Anti-Biased Film Festival
The Sixth installment of our Anti-Bias Film Festival is "Different" In this heartwarming video, we are introduced to Emily and Sam, two individuals who didn't know each other well but developed a unique bond. Emily expresses her concern and care for Sam, offering help when she notices he is in need. However, she is disappointed when Sam fails to reciprocate her support. Little did she know, there was much more to Sam than meets the eye. Through the power of sign language, Sam apologizes and reveals that they both value inner qualities over external appearances. This touching story showcases the beauty of true friendship that goes beyond surface-level differences.
Leadership Fundraiser
We’re excited to announce that the Ladysmith Leadership Club is launching a fundraiser that will not only bring our community together but also empower our students to make a positive impact.
We have designed a unique selection of shirt designs. We're proud to offer these T-shirts for sale, with all proceeds going directly back into our community initiatives, as decided upon by our students.
An order form will be sent home with the children this coming Tuesday with the sale later in the week. Thank you for continually supporting our efforts to foster leadership and community service.
Ladysmith Art Exhibition
The exhibition will run at the Ladysmith Gallery, located at 32 High Street, from May 1 to 22. Students 19 years and under are eligible to submit up to two works each to be included in the show. Applications for the student show are open online now, and are due by April 15.
Students who wish to sell their artwork in the show will receive 100% of the asking price if their work is sold. Alternatively, they may elect to list their work as "not for sale" if they would prefer to display their work and have it returned afterward.
Students wishing to have their work included in both our online and in-person show will each need to complete the online application form found here: www.ladysmitharts.ca/youth-shows-submissions
Student Learning Survey
The Provincial Student Learning Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers, and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.
Early in 2024 the Student Learning Survey will be administered to students in grades 4 and 7, their parents/guardians/caregivers, and all school staff. We encourage parents/guardians/caregivers to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – in addition, questions from the school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be included.
To complete the survey:
- Go to any computer that has an up-to-date internet browser access at home, work, or school.
- Go to www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm
- Under the section Direct Access – no logon number required select:
- District: the name of your child’s district
- School: the name of your child’s school
- Language: the language of your choice
- Complete the survey by clicking on the appropriate circle to answer each question. Move to the next set of questions by clicking on the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on the left arrow to navigate backwards.
- When you are finished the survey, you will get a message “Thank you for sharing your views”.
- Once complete, your school will have the results immediately.
The e-survey site will be open until May 3rd.
If you have any questions, please contact the school at 250-245-3351

This week’s Outer Limits update
Auditions were held all this week during fine arts periods. Most divisions are now finished while others will complete auditions this coming Tuesday. By late next week, every student will know their role in each play. Full scripts have been sent home with students in divisions 6 and 11 who have speaking roles so that they can start practising and memorizing their lines. (Other divisions will receive their cast scripts late next week.) I recommend that your child memorize a few lines each day or two to slowly build towards knowing all their lines by heart. The off-book date (when lines should be fully memorized) is April 2nd.
Along with their own lines, they need to memorize ‘cue lines’ as well. A cue line is dialogue spoken by another performer which is just before your child’s line. By knowing all the cue lines, students will know exactly when to speak during the play. A great way for you to help your child learn their cue lines is having you read random cue lines from the script and your child then continues the dialogue after each cue line. This will help them truly master their dialogue.
Please keep these scripts at home in a safe place so they won’t be misplaced or lost. There is no need for scripts to come back to school since we have copies in the fine arts room that we will be using during in-school rehearsals. Digital copies are not available.

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
