Family Newsletter-January 2019
As we draw closer to the end of 2018 we can reflect on all the positive events and learning opportunities that have happened so far this school year. We had a great Color Me Fun Run that raised funds to support our students, students engaged in some extra, fun learning such as the OMSI Science Festival and our Right Brain artist Taiko drumming. And don't forget the day to day learning opportunities that our teachers prepare for our students to provide a rigorous and engaging education. We hope you have an enjoyable winter break and we can't wait to continue this school year in 2019!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Gina McLain

Screenagers Movie Screening
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.
In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. Information regarding the Screenagers Movie can found at the Screenagers website: https://www.screenagersmovie.com
The Liberty Feeder Elementary Schools will be showing Screenagers at Liberty High School on January 15 at 6:00 PM. This is open to all Liberty Feeder schools (Eastwood, Mooberry, Quatama, Lenox, West Union, Orenco, Poynter, Liberty). This is for parents of students 5th grade and higher. We recommend that parents and students of 6th grade and higher attend. Lindsay Garcia (Principal of Eastwood Elementary) and Jon Pede (Principal of Poynter Middle School) will facilitate the screening. If you have questions please feel free to call Dr. Pede at Poynter Middle School at 503-844-1580.
