North Syracuse Central School District's weekly e-news
Issue #38 | October 22, 2021
Hello North Syracuse Central School District Parents, Guardians, Teachers and Staff!
As I walked out of the office the other day, noticing how low in the sky the sun was, the word "transition" popped into my head. The days are getting shorter, colder and darker and it is very apparent we are transitioning to a new season. Another change.
We have been through a lot and we continue to go through changes. Change can be hard...but it can also be good. We all face our own personal and professional challenges on an almost daily basis. Unfortunately, we don't know what the people we encounter are also facing as they move through life. My message this week is simple - try to take a step outside and understand the journey someone else is on.
Please remember a couple things for next week also: We will have a community information session on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building and Friday, Oct. 29 is a half-day for all students due to staff workshops.
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles, Superintendent of Schools
NS Junior High School Fashion Students’ Designs Hit the Runway
Project Runway, a popular reality tv show focused on fashion, pits contestants against each other as they strive to create top clothing designs while restricted by time, materials and theme.
As part of the curriculum for the Fashion in Our Lives course, students spend time exploring clothing styles, designers and trends and investigate influencing factors. As students develop their knowledge of fashion, they learn how to bring their ideas to life by constructing their own textile projects.
For her Project Runway contest, Mrs. Bellucci had her students create wedding gowns out of toilet paper. The gowns, which are currently on display in the school’s library, are now being voted upon in four categories: 1. Best Overall Design, 2. Most Original Design, 3. Best Execution & Detail and 4. Best Use of Fabric/material.
The contest was originally open only to students and staff at the junior high, but voting has been opened up to the public and entries are accepted online at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdMd2pXF-cwxXbeU5IYvG3RGurQJuH_joEgYkAuiRNcH5h9Rg/viewform.
Kelly Forsyth, the Library Media Specialist at North Syracuse Junior High recently invited NSCSD Staff to come to the school’s library to check out the project. She said, “When students and staff come together, truly amazing things happen. One of those things is Mrs. Bellucci's Project Runway project that came out of a Fashion class assignment. These students have created stunning wedding gowns out of toilet paper! Please check out the students’ hard work and talent and then VOTE for your favorites.”
More information and a link to vote can be found on the Project Runway webpage.

On Saturday, October 9, a number of high school students created teams and participated in the Syracuse Out of the Darkness Walk to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Three of those students, Genevieve Costigan, Maddy Gessini, and Emma Miller, work hard all year on the walk committee to plan and implement it each year. These students all became involved after losing a friend or struggling through their own mental health issues.
Genevieve Costigan started a team for CNS Chorus and had more than 15 members participate including chorus director, Danielle Rausa and orchestra director John Harnois. These students sang along to music played by our DJ and 4 D productions and entertained many while there. They have worked hard to be heard at CNS and create change related to mental health awareness.
