District Communication - September 29, 2021
Autumn Has Arrived
TPS Families -
The air has begun to cool and the acorns are falling - autumn has arrived!
The safety of our students, their families, and our staff are always of paramount importance. With so many adults and students returning to work and school after more than a year, we ask that all of our families and students take a minute to read the important safety reminders found on our Parent Resources Page.
Please be sure to check your school’s website and calendar for important news and information, activities and event details, and any grade or school-specific forms or support services. As always, thank you for continuing to be mindful of any separate district or school communications that may notify you of changes to schedules.
Yours in Education,
Shauna C. DeMarco
Superintendent Tenafly Public School

NJ Start Strong
Starting tomorrow, Thursday, September 30th, the NJ Department of Education (NJDOE) will administer the Start Strong assessments to all students in English Language Arts (ELA) grades 4-10, Mathematics grades 4-8, Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II, and in Science grades 6, 9, and 12. This flexibility of taking Start Strong instead of NJSLA last spring is only being offered for the 2020-2021 school year due to the impact of COVID-19. The Start Strong assessments are based on a subset of prioritized prior-year academic standards, can be administered in approximately 45-60 minutes, and will include the same accessibility features and accommodations as the NJSLA. Additional information regarding Start Strong can be found on the NJDOE website.
Exploring the World
Students at Tenafly Middle School in Ms. Coleman's class celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with paper folding and story telling, learning why Chinese communities come together and give thanks for their crops. Sixth grade students learned the art of paper folding, creating the noble Moon Rabbit, and presented Moon Festival Celebration rhyme. Seventh and eighth grade students created "Moon Festival" 3D cards and performed "Change and Houyi".
The theme for International Peace Day, celebrated on September 21st, was “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.” Mackay Elementary is celebrating by participating in a school-wide art project led by art teacher Kathleen Bracero and inspired by artist Takashi Murakami. The students created flowers, learning about gradients, color value, and blending. Follow along with us a we watch the progress toward this unique work of art.
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15th - October 15th, students across the district are learning songs, new words and phrases, researching Hispanic countries, learning Hispanic holidays and celebrations, and so much more. We have also added a Hispanic Heritage page to our website. Visit the website for some interactive Hispanic Heritage fun! More great pages coming soon!
Testing the Blackboard Alert System - Wednesday, October 6th
Despite the beautiful weather over the past week, Hurricane Ida reminded us that the Blackboard Alert and Notification system is a necessary tool for communicating last minute and emergency news. We will be running a test of the alert system system Wednesday, October 6th. Please update your account before the test to ensure that future notifications are received in the way that best works for your family. For instructions on updating a parent account, visit the Parent Tools and Technology page, or for staff, visit the Staff Resources page.
Bravo Nurse Hess!
Congratulations to our own Nurse Sharon Hess at Stillman Elementary School! Nurse Hess was recognized by the State of New Jersey and the New Jersey Department of Health for her hard work and dedication through the Covid-19 Pandemic and her prioritization of helping those who needed help. On Saturday September 18, 2021, in recognition of National Volunteer Appreciation Month, Nurse Hess was honored as a COVID-19 frontline volunteer of the New Jersey Medical Reserve Corp. Thank you, Nurse Hess for your dedication and shining such a positive light on Tenafly Public Schools.
Since last Wednesday, the district has had four individuals test positive for COVID-19; one at Maugham, one at Mackay, one at the Middle School, and one at the High School. Information was communicated to the respective school community on the day it was reported and is found on the District COVID Dashboard.
As a reminder, it is important to complete the Daily Symptom Tracker every day. Students who do not complete the tracker must be investigated by the school nurse and then complete the tracker during school. The tracker is designed to help us keep everyone safe. Thank you for your continued cooperation.
Colorful Friday
