DK partnered with the Smithsonian to publish these highly visual science and math books. They are perfect for students who ask me for "a book about physics" but don't want to read a textbook. Each book illustrates a wide range of concepts that curious students can browse and research further.

Mrs. Pursley's reading classes returned for a second year of Jólabókaflóð ("Christmas Book Flood"), an Icelandic tradition during which families exchange books. Students completed a reader's interest survey before Thanksgiving, and then I chose three books for each student. The week before winter break, students returned to the library to receive their packages. 33 students opted to check out one of their selections immediately, while some others expressed interest in returning for one or more later in the school year.
