University School Weekly Update

We hope everyone was able to enjoy the weekend break! As we prepare for the week ahead, we ask that you please review the information below:

Happy Thanksgiving - There will be No School on November 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2021.

Elementary School Honoree – Jakob Barnett

Jakob is hard working and kind. He treats others with respect at all times. He has a great sense of humor and always sees the good in the things around him. He loves to learn and he always gives everything he does his best. He goes above and beyond in the classroom. That permeates through the classroom and helps us all be better.

Getting to know Jakob Barnett

• Would you rather win $10,000 or let your best friend win $100,000? “I’d want my friend to win the money because I want to be nice.”

• What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Be nice to people and help others.”

• If you could have one song play every time you entered a room what would it be? “Old Town Road because my family plays it a lot and it makes me think of them.”

“Jakob is the kind of kid that makes the entire classroom better simply by having such a great attitude,” said Dr. Kelli Barnett, Jakob’s third-grade teacher. “He loves to do extra projects and dive deep in his learning and that is contagious.”

Middle School Honoree – Shanelle Cooper

Shanelle is a hard worker and she has been reading up a storm. She and her friend have also been finding Wordly Wise words in their novels each day!

• What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Don’t be a follower.”

"Shanelle is a hard worker who has a smile for everyone,” said her Middle School teachers. “We are so happy to see her excited about reading!”

High School Honoree – Ellie Ledbetter

Ellie is engaged in classroom discussions and offers well developed viewpoints in class. She respects the viewpoints of others. Her work in class shows a high level of consciousness and pride in her work.

• What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Slow down and don’t stress the small stuff.”

• If you could have one song play every time you entered a room what would it be? “Banana Pancakes because I just really like the song.”

“Ellie is a good example of the type of student that University School produces by her work at the Tennessee Governors School. Ellie’s work ethic is displayed in her ability to successfully balance a part-time job, dual enrollment classes and University School classes,” said Dr. Rayne Price, Ellie’s Environmental Science teacher.

Welcome to Ms. Leah Darnell, our new English Language Arts Teacher for grades 7 and 8. Ms. Darnell has been teaching middle and high school ELA for the past 12 years in both Kingsport and Johnson City Schools.

Welcome aboard Ms. Darnell - we are thrilled to have you join our Buccaneer family!

We at University School know that some of our families are struggling financially this year, but we want to help ensure that our students are able to celebrate the holidays during Winter Break. We want to help their wishes come true! If your family needs a bit of help providing a little extra this year, please complete the application below by December 1, 2021. We may not be able to fulfill every wish, but we will do our best to help your student feel special. PLEASE FILL OUT A SEPARATE GOOGLE FORM FOR EACH STUDENT. Information about pick up/delivery dates will be determined at a later time.

Dear Parents of UH Seniors,

The University School Yearbook Staff is preparing for the 2021/2022 yearbook. If you would like to purchase a Senior Ad, you can do so now. This is a chance to congratulate the seniors; if you are not familiar with the tradition of Senior Ads, you need only look as far as any Buccaneer yearbook.

A journalism student will create your ad, then we will allow you a chance to proof it and make any changes you wish. On your contract, you may indicate a color scheme for the ad, and we will try to incorporate it. You may submit anywhere from 7 to 20 pictures but be mindful that we are not always able to fit them all on a page. You may also create your own senior’s ad. It must be in a jpeg format (at least a 300 resolution).

If you are interested in purchasing space in this year’s yearbook, please complete the attached contract as well as submit payment, pictures, and a message by March 4, 2022. After that date, we will not accept any more senior ads.

This year, we have two ways to pay for your child’s senior ad. We will accept cash or checks made out to University School, or you may pay through the online yearbook payment system on the school website. It is located on the main school page in the University School Payment System box. You indicate the size of senior ad you wish to purchase and complete the process. The direct link is:

If you need help with math or science in high school or middle school, there is a new Science and Math Help Club. The meetings are on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15 - 5:00 p.m., in Learning Cottage 2 (Mrs. Sim's room).

As we prepare for the changing of the seasons, we ask that our families please review our inclement weather policy. Although we have a partnership with Washington County Schools, we do want to remind our families that we follow a different calendar and inclement weather and emergency closure policy, so please be sure to review the information below:

Inclement Weather & Emergency Closure Policy:

When there is inclement weather:

• University School will close if Johnson City Schools close for inclement weather.
• University School will also close for inclement weather if ETSU closes.
• University School will close if there is need due to an emergency at the school.

We will not make an announcement through the news media due to the fact that saying University School will be closed is confusing to ETSU students. Instead we ask that our students and parents/guardians be aware of the reasons for closure stated above and refer to the University School website and social media sites for updated announcements.

We are aware some students live in areas where the weather may be worse than it is in town. Therefore, if University School is open but road conditions between your home and the school are dangerous, we ask that you please do not put yourself at risk by attempting to drive to school. If this were to occur, please call the school office and inform us of your circumstances. On inclement weather days when Johnson City Schools are not regularly scheduled, announcements will be made through our normal email distribution, website, and social media outlets.
