From the Principal...
This year is going at lightning speed! Students are working very hard to learn all they can They use AVID strategies in their writing, question answering, collaboration with their teammates, their organization of their materials and their thoughts, and in their Reading.
Attendance and Success
I cannot stress enough the importance of students coming to school every day. I know we have spoken about this a lot this year. There is a proven link between students success and their attendance rate. Over the last 3 years, Jackson has seen a sharp decline in Attendance Rate (from 97% Attendance in 2019 to 84% Attendance in 2022) with this comes our decline in state testing scores. We went from a three year INCREASE from 2016-2019 to a two year decline in 2021 and 2022 (no state test data for 2020). This is in direct correlation to students attendance. When students are present, they will learn!
October 2nd-COUNT DAY
October 2nd is Count Day! We need ALL students present! This is how Jackson gets their funding for the school year. In order to continue to send students on field trips, buy them planners and supplies, pay for our interventionists, art teachers, theater programs, musical programs, etc. we need to make sure that all students are accounted for. PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS ARE PRESENT! In addition, students present may wear their favorite hat (they always want to wear hats in school :) on Monday!
I look forward to a terrific, new school year and as always, if you need anything, please call, email, or ClassDojo me, your classroom teacher(s), Social Worker, Counselor, Academic & Behavior Interventionist, etc. Together, we will make a difference!
Thank you,
Sara Miller, Principal

As part of the Healthy School Meals For All (HSMA) program, all students who attend a public school that D11 FNS provides meals for as part of the National School Lunch program will have access to free breakfast (at the schools that provide breakfast meals) and lunch.
Families who qualify for free or reduced meals are strongly encouraged to complete the Meal Benefits Application. It can provide additional benefits to you and your school in the form of fee waivers and additional school funding.
You will be notified by email of your child's status. Please update your contact information and email address at your school.

Book Fair eWallet is a digital payment option that’s a safe, convenient alternative to cash. It's easy to create an eWallet for students to shop the Fair by going to the Jackson Book Fair Link. The account owner simply adds funds and/or invites family and friends to contribute. At the time of checkout, the eWallet account can be looked up on the register or scanned for payment at the Fair.
An Update About Attendance with Ms. Kahrs
Happy October Jackson Jaguars!
As we enter October, we have our official count window. This is very important since the number we can claim helps us to buy learning materials to help serve your students better. Please make sure your students are in school each day and on time. If you are having trouble with getting your students to school on time, please let us know so we can do our best to help.
We are doing various awards for students who have great attendance each month, quarter, and semester. This gives students multiple opportunities to earn an award.
- For August: 162 students received awards.
- For September: 108 students with certificates and a treat on October 6th.
As a reminder, you must let us know within 48 hours of the reason your student is absent. If he or she is sick for 3 or more days, we will need a doctor’s note. Although COVID is still lingering around, please send your child to school unless a fever of 100.4, diarrhea, or vomiting is occurring. Letters will be sent out to students who are habitually truant. We may be reaching out to meet with you if your student has been tardy or absent in order to sign an attendance contract. It is extremely important your child is in school on time. Some of the most crucial learning is done first thing in the morning.
We are here to educate your students and help break down the barriers to that education. Please contact me if there may be anything we can do to help. My number is 719-328-7175 or email me at kyla.kahrs@d11.org.
Thank you,
Kyla Kahrs

We offer the students the opportunity to display their collections from home in the Media Center display case. The students really enjoy sharing their collections with their classmates and the display case is locked if security is a concern. To sign up call Mrs. Sobecki (328-5824) or send an email to rhonda.sobecki@d11.org . Please help make this a special way to let your child share their interest or hobby at school.
Volunteers Needed in the Media Center
We need help with shelving in the library on a weekly basis. If you are able to commit a couple hours a week – that would be a huge help. Please contact Mrs. Sobecki (328-5824 or rhonda.sobecki@d11.org ) if you are able to help.
Time with the Social Worker
Parents/Guardians,
September 15 to October 15 celebrates National Hispanic American Heritage Month, which honors Hispanic and Latino Americans' unique cultures and contributions.
Hispanic Heritage was first celebrated in 1968 and extended to the month of September 15 to October 15 in 1988. The celebration has been a time to share history, celebrate heritage, and honor the accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino Americans past and present. National Hispanic American Heritage Month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th as well as other holidays that recognize Hispanic contributions such as Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day.
This year it is important to acknowledge that Hispanic and Latino American Communities are disproportionately impacted by racism, bias, and other discrimination that exacerbates existing disparities in our society and take a toll on the well-being of communities of color. National Hispanic Heritage Month is a good opportunity to bring awareness to mental health and encourage seeking help. It takes strength to acknowledge our challenges, talk about mental health, and support each other in seeking help.
Colorado Springs School District 11 is committed to raising awareness about mental health and equitable access to quality mental health services.
