NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
6 May 2021
All loving God,
We give thanks and praise for mothers young and old.
We pray for young mothers who give life and count toes and tend to our every need.
May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care
For their families and themselves with great joy.
We pray for our mothers who have nurtured and cared for us.
May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways.
We remember mothers who have separated from their children
Because of poverty or conflict.
May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away.
We pray for women who are not mothers,
But still love and shape us with their motherly care and compassion.
We remember mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers
who are no longer with us, but who live forever in our memory
and nourish us with their love.
Amen
Dear Parents and Staff
After many anxious hours, the weather was kind to us yesterday morning as we were able to acknowledge and thank our mums for all the wonderful things that they do for us with breakfast and a special Mass. I hope all the mums enjoyed the morning and that the celebrations continue through until Sunday with your children going above and beyond to make you feel very special. I won’t say my mum’s age but, realising that I’m no spring chicken, you can safely guess that it’s a pretty big number. She has everything that she needs or wants so I hope you won’t mind if I take this opportunity to share her gift, which is including her photo with my son, Cameron, in today’s newsletter. Happy Mother’s Day mum and to all of our school mums as well.
N.B. This photo was taken at Christmas which accounts for the bells in Cameron’s hair.
SARAH SARMARDIN
I received notification late last week that Sarah Sarmardin has been recognised as the West Australian Library Association (WASLA) Library Technician of the Year. In the letter that I received they outlined the reasons why Sarah was selected as:
Sarah has received this award in recognition of the quality of her work in assisting students and staff at Notre Dame Catholic PS. Her dedication and commitment to the library and the provision of a range of information services that support staff and students’ engagement in curriculum programs and literacy outcomes is to be commended. Sarah is always willing to share her knowledge and she has an engaging rapport with students and staff. Sarah is an excellent advocate for the library and the services provided by this central school support.
This is very high praise and I concur totally. I’m sure you all join with me in congratulating Sarah for being recognised for the joy and enthusiasm that she brings to our library every day. We are truly blessed.
THANK YOU, PARENTS & FRIENDS!
We have been waiting since late last year for new furniture to arrive for our library and it has finally been delivered this morning. This beautiful, functional and engaging furniture has been fully funded by our very supportive P&F. I haven’t included any photos in the newsletter as I will leave this for the P&F to do in their section of next week’s newsletter. Without the P&F, equipment such as this is very difficult to fund and I, again, thank all members for their ongoing support for our school initiatives.
SACRAMENT OF EUCHARIST
Our children in Year Four continue their preparation to receive their First Holy Communion at the end of this month with their Commitment Masses over this weekend and their Retreat day next Monday. Please keep all of these children, their families and their teachers in your prayers.
NAPLAN
I’m sure all the children, teachers and parents of Years Three and Five are fully aware that the NAPLAN assessments will take place over the next two weeks. I know our children have been very well prepared for the assessments and will do their best. It is important to remember that the NAPLAN assessments are only one component upon which teachers make judgements for Semester Reporting.
YEAR 2P ASSEMBLY
I’m looking forward to seeing what Mrs Donovan-Flintoff’s Year Two class have in store for us at their Assembly tomorrow. Due to ongoing restrictions the Assembly will be live-streamed to classrooms with two members from each child’s family invited to attend the Assembly in the school Hall.
EAGLES CUP
I wish our Year Six students a huge amount of fun as they take on St Munchin’s Catholic Primary in netball, AFL and soccer tomorrow afternoon.

YEAR 2 CLASS NEWS
What a fun and busy start we have had to Term Two!
Religion:
We have been exploring how our actions help to create positivity and a feeling of love in others. We watched The Story of the Warm Fuzzies and then talked about how important it is to be like a ‘Warm Fuzzy’ and be kind and loving to others like Jesus. We then got to make our own Warm Fuzzies which was a lot of fun! The story of The Last Supper is such an important part of the Mass when remembering Jesus. We will soon be exploring the importance of the Eucharist in our lives.
Mathematics
This term we have been extending our knowledge of three-digit numbers. We have been making these numbers with MABs, ordering them from highest to lowest and lowest to highest, enhancing our skills of expanded notation and writing the number names in digits and words. We have also been looking at fact families and practising turn around facts. This term we will also learn about money. In Year Two we need to order, sort and add money. Adding money is a tricky skill but we will work hard to achieve success at this.
Art
This term we are lucky enough to have Mrs Flexman come to our classrooms and teach us Art. We listened to the story of The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle. We then researched the features of a chameleon and explored the amazing colours their bodies can be. We are now in the process of designing and making our own chameleons. We can’t wait to see how they turn out!
Mother’s Day
We have been busily preparing our cards and presents for Mother’s Day. We hope all Mums in our school community have a lovely Day on Sunday. We know our mums will all love the special things we made them.
Mrs Tiffany Donovan-Flintoff and Miss Sharna McKinlay.

INTERNATIONAL COMPOST AWARENESS WEEK
Hi Everyone,
This week is International Compost Awareness Week
Better Soil, Better Life, Better Future
Sunday 2 May – Saturday 8 May 2021
It’s all about raising awareness of the importance of compost.
Compost and worm farms help scrap carbon pollution by keeping organic materials out of landfill and helping to build healthier soils.
Did you know that Almost half of all fruit and vegetables produced are wasted?
(That’s 3.7 trillion apples!)
Here at Notre Dame, we are doing our bit to fight food waste by feeding our Crunch & Sip scraps to our worms.
Every week, we have so many scraps that some are collected and taken off-site to a compost bin. This is called “sharing our waste”.
Well done, Notre Dame. You are helping to fight climate change!
