Commitment and Community
In the days after the magnificent National Championship of our Men's Basketball team, I came across an article in Commonweal (of which our own Theology Professor Massimo Faggioli is a contributing writer) about the team ethic of Catholic college basketball. The author, Paul Moses, argues that in today's culture of celebrity, it is the Catholic, and Augustinian, tradition of teamwork that allows schools like Villanova to "punch above their weight." Not that Villanova does not recruit talented players; it does, but Jay Wright and his coaching staff discover talented players who fit Villanova's deeper culture of commitment and community.
This ethos goes far beyond basketball at Villanova, and is why we create outstanding teams in our academic departments and programs. We attract faculty, staff and students who want to be a part of something greater than themselves, who know we can do more together than on our own, and who approach teaching and learning with empathy and love. We are successful because we search for truth together.
