WILBUR NEEDS A SECURE ENTRANCE!
Mark your calendar….February 29, 2024 is a big date in Colonial Nation!!
On February 29, 2024 we will need your support to get out and vote to improve our facilities and maintain the quality of our programs and services…our students deserve it! There are several projects that will enhance our facility when this referendum passes. The most important one of these, in my eyes, is the creation of a secure vestibule and lobby area for Wilbur Elementary! As most of you know, for security and safety reasons, visitors must wait outside when coming to Wilbur. A secure vestibule would mean that families would be able to enter the building and wait in a lobby area that does not have immediate access to the rest of the building; thereby keeping our school secure while still providing a warm, dry area for families to wait. We expect to be able to share drawings of what this would be like in the coming month or so!
For the most current information about the referendum, check out the district website at:

….COLONIAL NATION DESERVES IT!!!!
CAR LINE PARENTS
Please ensure that anyone dropping off or picking up in our car line know the process and procedures so that we can keep things moving quickly for the rest of our families. All cars must pull up as far as they can in our active car line area so that we can fit as many cars as possible to unload at the same time. With this in place, our car line is able to be done within 10 to 15 minutes in total. Every car that stops short puts all other families in a worse position to get to work on time so please communicate with all pick up people. Thanks!!
THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE PARENTS
School districts across the country are recognizing their role in ensuring children develop good social and emotional skills early in life. As a district, we support our students having the opportunity to learn social and emotional skills on a daily basis at school. Recent legislation in Delaware now requires students to participate in a universal social-emotional behavior screening process, just as they participate in reading and math screening.
With this, Wilbur Elementary is conducting universal screening in all of our 3rd grade classrooms and some of our 4th grade classrooms to identify students who may benefit from additional social/emotional support throughout the school day. Teachers will receive guidance on promoting wellness in the classroom.
- 3rd Grade Families: Opt-out forms were sent home in the Fall, if you have opted your child out, they will not participate in the Winter or Spring screener
- 4th Grade Families: If your child’s classroom was selected to pilot the universal screener, you will receive a detailed letter with the ability to opt your child out of this screener.
In the coming years, Colonial will be gradually rolling the universal screener out to students in other grades.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to expand this process.
YEARBOOK PRE-ORDERS ARE NOW OPEN!
Yearbooks will be on sale online from now through April 10. They can be ordered now and will be delivered during the last few weeks of school.
PIK MY KID: THE WAY YOU NEED TO MAKE DISMISSAL CHANGES
This year, our school will be continuing the PikMyKid program to help organize the school car rider dismissal process and improve safety. This program uses a phone application downloaded onto your smart phone (found in the app store) and will allow you to notify the school of pick-up changes, authorize others to pick-up your child from the car line, and help organize the car line during pick-up. PikMyKid numbers DO NOT CHANGE FROM YEAR TO YEAR so, if you had a car tag last year, you will be able to use it this school year as well.
The registration process is easy and we ask that all parents register with the phone application as soon as possible, even if your child is a bus rider. All dismissal changes must be done through the PikMyKid app. Dismissal changes stop at 3:00 p.m. so we can prepare for a smooth dismissal and ensure that all teachers have been notified of changes. With almost 1100 students to get safely dismissed, there will be no exceptions to this rule. I'm sorry in advance for any inconvenience!
Several resources are included below to help you understand how to use the application and assist you with this transition. Please make sure you register with your personal current mobile phone number or the app will not allow you to access your child’s information for security reasons.
If you do not think the school has your mobile number on file or if your child does not appear in your app’s home page, contact support@pikmykid.com mailto:support@pikmykid.com after registration, with your child’s name, school, grade, and updated contact information for you.
Anyone who will be picking up your child will need to have your child(ren)'s PikMyKid number displayed on their dash. You will need to provide them with this information prior to them arriving at Wilbur.
