Celebrating BACK TO SCHOOL!
Last night we celebrated our second OLA Back to School Night. It was great to see so many of you who came to hear from the OLA staff. We hope you left with many more images of the friendly and supportive faces of the OLA team.
This next month, we are asking all Learning Coaches and families who help support your students in OLA by reminding them that cameras ON is an important part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers lose important context clues when they cannot see their students. Students can blur their background on Zoom even if they are on a Chromebook.Teachers can help students add this option to their zoom account. Another tool that some of our teachers use to help with the possible challenge of turning cameras on is the use of FOCUS MODE in Zoom. This means that teachers can see the students but the students cannot see each other. Thank you for helping the teachers out with this important learning tool: SEEING your kiddos in class is powerful!
During the Back to School night you heard about our daily schedule. Office hours in the afternoon are crucial to student success. In online schools asking for support is the norm and welcomed. However, that may not be an easy thing for all students to do. Students may need some encouragement from you especially if you hear from your student that a class is hard or confusing or challenging. Remind them to reach out to their teachers and set up an office hours appointment.
In Grades 6-12, Term 1 ends on November 3. Students should be about 55-60% completed with each of their courses. If your student has not quite hit the 55% completion mark yet, visiting their teachers during office hours to get support or spending more time at night catching up will be an important strategy to ensure that when the term ends, they will be done with all of their classes with strong grades.
Enjoy our Fall weather and incredible autumn colors!
Take care,
Mrs. H

Reading Intervention Teacher K-8
Take some time to read every single day! You can read on your own, to a younger sibling, to your trusted adult, or even to your toys. Reading for at least 15 minutes each day has shown to have terrific benefits for your reading growth over time.
Learning Coaches, it is also important for you to read to your child. Find a book that you both enjoy and take some time together. Reading to your child is just as important because it models to them the flow and expression that comes with practice. Happy Reading! Teacher Burns

Tech Help Desk/Chromebooks - Important Information
Hello. The process for picking up a PPS chromebook for your students has two methods. One is to call the OLA help desk at 503-916-3375 and press 2 . Please leave your student full name, ID number, and a phone number to contact you at. Another way is fill out this form by clicking on this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScbJp_A-UDV7Mf39czFZsmJDg5sgGj4qPVDPNJ-1H0cOMSfhg/viewform

Here are a few tips to keep your tech working.
At least once a week the device should be powered down and turned back on. This will allow for updates to install and give the system a chance to refresh.
