Message from Mr. VanIwarden
Hi CCE Families,
I hope this email finds you well and the start of the school year has gone well at home, it has started amazingly at CCE. I wanted to take a moment to share with you all the exciting things happening at our school and remind you about an important topic we need to address with our students.
First off, I have to say that we have had an absolutely incredible start to the year! Our students have been showing up with smiles on their faces and an excitement for learning. It's wonderful to see them embracing new challenges and working hard daily. We couldn't ask for a better group of young learners!
Speaking of challenges, I wanted to partner with you about the importance of bike safety. With the fantastic Colorado weather, it's the perfect time for our students to enjoy a bike ride to school or around the neighborhood. However, it's crucial that we reinforce some key safety measures with them. Please take a moment to talk to your child about the importance of using crosswalks (riding or walking), riding on the right side of the road or utilizing bike paths when available, and always stopping at stop signs. By instilling these habits early on, we can ensure their safety and well-being while they enjoy their bike rides.
On a lighter note, I wanted to share the excitement and joy we all experienced during last week's student assembly. It was an event filled with laughter, and excitement as students and staff danced and participated in fun challenges. We learned about our Coal Creek ROCKS motto, which stands for Respect, Ownership, Cooperation, Kindness and Safety. If your student has not already talked to you about the assembly, be sure to ask them about it.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. We value your input and are here to support you and your child in any way we can. Together, we can make this school year the best one yet!
Please take a moment to look at our school calendar for events happening in September. We have a PTA Meeting, Coal Creek Accountability Meeting, PTA Silent Disco, our Jog A Thon along with other events happening this month.
New this year we will be hosting several informal parent meetings where we can come together and collaborate on various topics that impact our school.
This is a fantastic chance for all of us to work alongside each other and share our thoughts and ideas. Whether it's discussing challenges or celebrating the positive aspects of our school, your input is valued.
Please note that this event is exclusively for adults, and we kindly request that childcare arrangements be made prior to the meeting.
Here are the details you need to mark on your calendar:
What: Popcorn w/ the Principal
Date: September 18th
Time: 5:00-6:00 pm
We look forward to seeing you there and working together to make a positive difference.
Wishing you all a fantastic Labor Day weekend!

Volunteering at Coal Creek
If you plan on volunteering in any capacity at CCE, including attending a field trip, you will need to complete a Raptor Background Check annually. Please note that this Check is valid for one year from the date of completion. In addition, you will need to complete a Volunteer Agreement annually. You can print this document and return to the Office or we will have them available the first time you volunteer. These forms need to be completed every school year.
You do not need to complete a check if you are attending a class party or after hours activities.
When entering the school, always be prepared to show ID at the front desk. You will be entered into the system and provided with a Visitor Sticker.
Please review BVSD Volunteer Guidelines and all links HERE!
Pupil Count
The Pupil Count window is September 25th – October 9th,
with October 2nd being the actual Pupil Count Day.
Please try to schedule all appointments or vacations outside of this time period. This is how our school receives funding for our students so it is VERY important that your student is in attendance during this time.

Welcome Coal Creek Families!
We are beyond thrilled to welcome you and your family to the 2023-2024 school year! My name is Devan Haas and this is my first year at Coal Creek! As your child’s school counselor, I strive to meet the diverse social, emotional, and academic needs of all students. The school counseling program focuses on helping students achieve academic and personal success through a variety of preventive and developmentally-appropriate activities. I work with students in all settings including: classroom lessons, small groups, and individual support.
Classroom Lesson Overview
As the school counselor, I will be providing classroom lessons in every classroom twice per month as part of our universal instruction. Grades K-2 will be receive lessons based on the Zones of Regulation curriculum. Zones is a social-emotional curriculum created to teach children self-regulation and emotional awareness. It uses four colors to help children self-identify how they’re feeling and categorize it based on colors. Grades 3-5, will receive lessons based on the Sources of Strength curriculum. Sources of Strength is a strength based social emotional curriculum. October and November will be Bully Awareness and Prevention Units. Blue Sky Bridge will be coming to Coal Creek to provide lessons in Kinder, 3rd and 5th grade this year and more information will come as the time approaches. Please reach out if you have comments or questions about classroom lessons.

Colorado House Bill 21-1258 established this temporary behavioral health services program to provide access to mental health and substance use disorder services for youth, including addressing needs that may have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic.
All youth aged 18 and younger are eligible, as well as all young people aged 21 and
younger who receive special education services. In May 2023, the Colorado State Legislature renewed the program through June 30, 2024. The program, called I Matter, is funded by the Colorado Behavioral Health Administration. The program provides up to six free behavioral health sessions for youth in Colorado and reimburses participating providers, which are licensed therapists from agencies and independent contractors. Here is a link to Frequently Asked Questions.
Colorado Crisis Services provides free, confidential and immediate support from trained professionals and peer specialists, available 24/7/365 by calling 844-493-TALK (8255), or texting TALK to 38255. Colorado residents can also seek services in-person at our walk-in centers, regardless of ability to pay. If you don’t know where to begin getting help with a mental health, substance use or emotional concern—for you, or for someone you know—start here.
Spotlight on New Staff Members
Lena Perez: Dean of Students
Hello Coal Creek Community,
I’m excited to join you this school year as your Dean of Students! As mother of two children, a classroom teacher of 8 years, a preschool paraeducator for 2, and a substitute teacher for 5 years, I have a deep appreciation for developing the potential of each and every student and the effort that is required in partnership with families, educators, and community members. The last two years I have served as the MTSS lead at Niwot High School and plan to continue focusing on meeting the needs of each and every student, whether that means academic, attendance, or social-emotional support to develop positive habits and behaviors at school. My principal practicum was at Eisenhower Elementary School and I’m thrilled to be back in the elementary setting to work with our young and curious learners! My family and I live in Longmont and our favorite activity is to camp and hike at Rocky Mountain National Park and to cuddle with our friendly Pitbull named Maize and learning-to-be-friendly Chihuahua named Cinnamon. My favorite books right now are “Belonging” by Geoffrey L. Cohen and “Atomic Habits” by James Clear.

PTA News
School breakfast and lunch are now FREE for BVSD students. Other important cost savings available for families who qualify and complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Application
Each student will be allowed one complete breakfast and one complete lunch for free every day. In order to receive them for free, students must take an entire meal. For example, taking only a yogurt at breakfast or a piece of fruit at lunch would not be free.
Lunch includes an unlimited salad bar. Second entrees and a la carte items (like sides of fruit, salad bar, or milk WITHOUT a full lunch) must still be paid for. Students who would like to purchase those items can still use available meal account funds.
Even though lunch is now free, it is still very important that families complete the free and reduced meal application, as it waives and reduces fees district-wide for families, can impact transportation for some families, and impacts important funding for individual schools.
It also qualifies families for a 50% reduction in Lifelong Learning tuition, and waived tuition for BVSD Online classes (excluding the $50 registration fee). Child Care families will continue to apply for financial assistance through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP).
Visit the Free and Reduced Price Meals webpage for information on applying for free or reduced meals or contact your school directly.
