ELC Newsletter

We begin our month by recognizing Read Across America. This is a national movement that began in 1998 to get kids excited about reading. We are excited to participate as so many other schools across the country do so. Within the week is the birthday of beloved children's book author, Dr. Seuss. At the ELC, we feature a different Dr. Seuss book each day of the week with all kindergarten classes reading that day's book and celebrating with activities that tie into the book and dressing up with the theme each day. It is a wonderful showcase of some of the Dr. Seuss favorites. Watch closely, that Cat in the Hat pops in for a visit every year to soak up the glory and tribute of the week! We invite you to join in the fun this week as we ramp up the excitement of reading!

Our kindergarteners have been working so hard all year to become readers and we are so proud of their grit and progress! We are seeing readers everywhere this spring and we are so excited to reward their hard work! Our sight word challenge is in full swing for all kindergarten students to achieve prizes for their hard work! Classroom teachers and aides will be assessing sight word mastery and awarding prizes for each tier accomplished! Be sure and practice those words with your child each day to help them grow!

And your kiddos are too! You should see the smiles when they know they nail it!! Keep up all the hard work- it's really paying off. We love all the growth the kids are having and all the amazing work they are doing. We are so proud of them all.

At the end of last month... the kiddos turned in all of those tickets they have been earning all over the place here at school. As a school, they blew away their goal Mrs. Gutierrez had set for them and earned a Game Day here at school along with some new games to keep in their classrooms. The kids loved all the new games and had such a great time playing!

The Family That Plays Together Stays Together! We were absolutely delighted with the participation in our annual Family Game Night! It was wonderful to see so many of our families pulling out those games and making together time! The kids were all so excited the day after to talk about what they played and with who! There are countless benefits to playing tabletop games with your children ranging from their social skills to academic development. We had 63 families and 17 staff members with their families participate in our virtual event! Our big winner of the game bundle was Jacob from Mrs. Swims class, and Mrs. Swims herself was the big winner of the staff basket. Lucky Room 7!

Here at the ELC, we had over 300 boxes of cereal to donate to the Hobart Food Pantry. WOW! We lined the hall with all the boxes and invited all the kiddos out and they watched in amazement as the domino effect happened with all 300+ boxes! They loved seeing the power of kindness in action!

First Grade Round Up will begin on Monday March 7 and end on Friday March 11th. Sometime during the week, we need you to log into your child's Skyward account and update all your information so we can get them placed in a 1st grade classroom! It's super fast and super simple!! Kindergarten Round Up is also open from Monday March 7th- Friday March 11th! We will need all the items requested in order to get your child enrolled, so please make sure you have all documents stated in the graphic below. If you have any questions regarding registering a new kindergarten student for next year, please call Mindy here at The ELC at 219-942-7263 x8802.

Students can cashing in their PBIS tickets for the experience of SRO for the day. For 50 tickets, students can shadow SRO Joe for his daily rounds. They are awarded the privilege of using the radio, checking security of our hallways and doors and even peeking at the security cameras! They receive a special badge and bragging rights for helping to keep our school as safe as it can be! Congratulations Brickies and thanks for being such great leaders at our school!

Students can also cash their tickets in for the experience of being Mrs. Gutierrez's side kick for the day! For 100 tickets, kids can help Mrs. Gutierrez lead the morning announcements, walk around from class to class checking things out, and lend a hand where ever needed! There is also some serious bragging rights involved in being the Principal for the day as well as the mighty power of getting to carry the walkie talkie and sometimes even getting to talk into it!!! We are so proud of these Assistant Principals we have had so far this year! One friend is even on her SECOND time of doing it this year! WAY TO GO!

The chicks are coming!!!!! Oh, what a wonderful time at the ELC each year when the eggs arrive! We are looking forward to March 7-18 when the eggs will get delivered to each classroom and they will go through the incubation process and hatch into peeping mounds of baby chicks! Students learn the process of turning the eggs and study the progress and changes each day. They record the process in their chick journals as they follow it daily. As the chicks hatch out, students are able to watch them and learn about the process and the ever important egg tooth! Be sure to ask you child about the daily developments.....their stories will crack you up!
