Otter News
October 14, 2022
Otter Families,
We've had a fantastic fall filled with nice dry weather. The forecast later in the week may see a change. Please send your children to school with clothes for playing outside in wet weather. We will continue to have outdoor recess unless, it's raining enough you would want an umbrella. In those conditions, raincoats are super important. If you're looking for a raincoat, feel free to reach out to Family Support Worker Sherrill Vaughan.
On October 27, we are kicking off our affinity breakfasts with the principal. Spanish speaking families are invited to meet with the principal over a light breakfast on October 27 from 8:30-9:30 in the cafeteria. JRE will provide a light breakfast and interpreters.
Please see the note below regarding signing up for Talking Points. As of October 14, we will no longer circulate messages via SchoolMessenger and will use only Talking Points. You can set up notifications to come via text, the TalkingPoints App, or your email. TalkingPoints for Families (talkingpts.org)

For cupcakes that are donated for the Cupcake Challenge they are required to be nut-free. We would appreciate having options that are also dairy and or egg-free and some gluten-free ones as well, so any child who has issues with those ingredients can enjoy cupcakes too!
Please see and use this updated flyer and info for Fall Festival. We hold an event we have called a "cakewalk" (or "cupcake walk.") It has recently been brought to our attention that the term "cakewalk" originates from slavery and the plantation south and was continued later in minstrel shows. We do not condone any allusions to slavery or racism. We apologize for the use of the term and our cupcake event, which does not resemble the original cakewalk in any way, is now called "the cupcake challenge."
Please read here ( http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ug03/lucas/cake.html ) for more information and we are thankful to the folks who pointed this information out to us.

Help the classroom!
JR PTA is looking for volunteers to be Raft Captains (the JRE equivalent of room parents). We are hoping to have 1-2 parents per class. Like otters who wrap themselves in kelp to stay together, raft captains will build community by connecting gradeband and class families to the school and to each other. This may include planning gradeband playdates, organizing around Staff Appreciation week, recruiting chaperones for class field trips, and supporting other teacher requests. Time commitment is 1- 4 hours per month. Please email Kristy and Dragana if you are interested in being a Raft Captain: OtterRaftCaptain@gmail.com
