President's Message
May is here and school is almost over. The year has flown. Happy School Nurse Day to all of you. What you do each day is so important to the future lives of the children you serve. Included in this newsletter is a poem that Lisa Sicilio changed the wording in to reflect school nursing.
I hope as you have made your plans for summer they include attending NASN's annual conference in Denver. This years conference is special as one of our own will be inducted as the new president of NASN. Laurie Combe from the Houston area will be inducted. She worked for Klein ISD but with the responsibilities of being president of NASN she has retired from there but is doing school nurse and school health consulting. It is such an honor for me to be able to call Laurie Combe my friend and I can't wait to celebrate her in Denver.
TSNO Annual Conference will be in San Antonio on the Riverwalk this fall and we are working on a great line up of speakers to help advance you in your career as a school nurse.

The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report envisions the future where “primary care and prevention are central drivers of the health care system”. School nursing is at the forefront addressing this vision. School nurses must reach out further beyond speaking with other school nurses to influence perceptions, policy, and lawmakers. Join in today in advocating with Voice and Action. NASN has provided a toolkit for the 2019 National School Nurse Day for you to use in how and why school nurses are needed. Let’s join in the effort to influence and build key relationships and stakeholders that are necessary to expand awareness in school nursing and the benefits it offers for students to be healthy, safe and ready to learn.

Prevent Cancers Caused by HPV from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

As many of you know, I represent TSNO on the American Cancer Society HPV Coalition. It is an honor for me to represent school nurses! We are one of the few nursing groups represented because we have the potential to make such a difference!
For those of you who have the opportunity to educated parents as well as students, I wanted to include several update links and information regarding this Cancer Prevention Vaccine for boys and girls! It is the recommendation to bundle HPV with the 7th grade booster vaccines. This timeframe allows for the best uptake of the vaccine in order for it to provide the efficacy to combat the HPV virus.
When notifiying parents about the 7th grade boosters their child must have by August 2019, be sure to include HPV as an option to bundle with Tdap and MCV. This is a great education opportunity for you to notify parents of the reasons for HPV vaccine series which is cancer prevention. These pointers taken from the CDC website:
· HPV is recommended for both boys and girls ages 11-12, can start as early as age 9.
· Complete the series before the 13th birthday to be most effective.
· Each HPV vaccine has gone through years of extensive safety testing before being licensed by the FDA.
· Most common side effects are pain, redness and dizziness. Suggest to remain seated for 15 minutes after receiving the shot to prevent falls from fainting. Children with allergy to yeast should not receive Gardasil.
· When the HPV vaccine series is completed, it can prevent cancer!

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of more than 150 viruses. About one in four people in the United States have it at any time. It usually does not cause symptoms, and can resolve on its own. But some HPV infections do not go away, and can lead to cancer (i.e., cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, and rectal cancers, as well as cancers of the tongue, throat, and tonsils) in men and women. The HPV vaccine is most effective during adolescence, when the body produces more antibodies against the virus.
