Tuesday, November 7th is the end of the first quarter of school. It is important that students continue reviewing their grades in Skyward and turning in any missing work before November 7th. Parents/guardians, please take time to review your student's grades with them and discuss any missing work they may have. If you have any questions, please contact their teachers. Shop After-Hours Club will be every Monday in room 135 starting November 6th from 2:30 - 4:00 PM. Come work on finishing projects from class or start something new.

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) assessment will be administered on November 7, 2023 in the SHS library. This assessment can be used as a graduation pathway with a passing score. Please see Christy Thompson to signup for the assessment by Thursday, November 2nd if you are interested.

Students will need to be in the SHS library by 7:40 a.m. The test is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Students can leave and return back to class after they have finished. All students need to bring their Chromebook (fully charged) to take the test.

Fall Conferences will be Wednesday - Friday, November 15th, 16th and 17th. We will have early release during these dates. Student schedules for these three days will be 7:40 - 10:40 AM. PLEASE NOTE: There is no late start on Wednesday, November 15th.

Our teachers/staff will be selecting students they feel are in need of a conference. Our office will be reaching out to selected families to schedule conferences. If you would like to have a conference, please contact our office at 360-629-1340 so we can schedule one for you.

Meanwhile, we continue to encourage families to submit a Free and Reduced Meal application online via Skyward Family Access by clicking the Food Service tab and then Applications.

The first in a series of free, public events to share information about the school district's replacement levy is taking place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Stanwood-Camano YMCA's Community Room.

The Replacement Levy will be on the Feb. 13 ballot. The levy is not a new tax. It is a replacement for our current levy, set to expire in 2024.

The Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) plays a key role in developing our long-term capital facilities plan and providing input on facility use to ensure the community's values and priorities are accurately represented. We are proud to be partnering with the Washington Guaranteed Admissions Program (WAGAP) to offer students who are choosing college as their next step an incredible opportunity.

WAGAP can guarantee students admission to six four-year public universities in the state if they meet these two criteria:

• Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher

• Complete or are on track to complete by fall 2024 all the College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs)

WAGAP is aimed toward students in 11th and 12th grades to help them know they’ll be admitted to a university even before they apply!

Participating in WAGAP is just one part of our District Strategic Plan, which includes an overarching goal that every student will graduate with the skills, experience, and readiness to pursue the future of their choosing and be equipped with the knowledge, abilities, and attributes essential for a purposeful, productive, and happy life.

This Thursday, November 2nd, is the second lesson in a series of three lessons about the hazards of e-cigarettes. Lessons will take place during a modified schedule (please see below).

Many teens are curious about e-cigarettes. In 2022, about 14.1% of high school students and 3.3% of middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. Nearly half of high school students have tried an e-cigarette in some areas.

Many teens believe that e-cigarettes are safe. In reality, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and toxins, some known to cause cancer. Nicotine is highly addictive, especially to a developing teen brain. What begins as experimentation can easily lead to a lifetime of nicotine addiction.

It does not take that long for young people to become addicted to nicotine because:

• E-cigarettes provide nicotine in doses as large as, or larger than, regular cigarettes.

• Children and youth become addicted to nicotine much faster than adults.

• Nicotine has more harmful effects on the developing adolescent brain, making it worse for kids than adults.

• Nicotine use as a teen raises the risk of using other substances and experiencing addiction later in life.

Afterschool Credit retrieval started last Tuesday and will continue every Tuesday throughout the school year. This is a great opportunity for students to retrieve credits to be on track for graduation. Below are the credits each grade level should have at this time of the year. For students who do not have the minimum number of credits listed below to be on track for graduation, please see Christy Thompson, counselor, to sign up for credit retrieval.

Credits students should have to be on track for graduation:

• 9th Grade - 9th grade students are not expected to have any credits at this time since they just started high school. At the end of 1st semester, 9th grade students will need to have 3 credits to be on track for graduation.
• 10th Grade - 6 credits
• 11th Grade - 12 credits
• 12th Grade - 18 credits

It is important that students come to school everyday with their Chromebooks charged so they can participate in electronic assignments. We do not have additional charges or Chromebooks to lend out if Chromebooks are not charged. Please make sure Chromebooks are plugged in every night so they are fully charged for the next school day.

Registration packets will be available in the main SHS office, in the SHS Commons, online at the SHS website/school departments/traffic safety education, and Lincoln Hill High School main office. All classes are taught by certificated Washington state instructors and graduates of Central Washington State University’s Traffic Safety program. Instructors are all certificated Washington state secondary instructors.
