Key News for explorer families
I know many people feel this way during this time of year, but I cannot believe we’ve reached December 16th, and the end of the first semester for the school year. In many ways, it feels like it was just Sneak Peek. I am so thankful to the Northwood staff and community. I have been welcomed here by all and have truly appreciated getting to work alongside all who are supportive of and invested in Northwood.
The next two weeks will go by quickly, no doubt. I believe strongly in valuing the times we have with family and friends. My wish for everyone this holiday is that all find time to create special memories. My own children have already reminded me of some of the traditions we have that they don’t want me to forget.
We will miss our Explorers these next two weeks. Don’t forget to open and clear out backpacks and lunchboxes today. I once had the unfortunate experience of finding an old clementine in my son’s lunchbox after going untouched for the break. He ended up needing to use a sack lunch for the rest of that week until I could get him a new lunch box ;) School resumes on Wednesday, January 4th as the start of second semester. Sending holiday wishes to all!
With joy and gratitude,

Kindergarten Explorers
Kindergarten has been traveling to different countries (rotating around to each kindergarten classroom) each day learning about other countries, their languages, customs, traditions, and how they celebrate their big holidays. We’ve also had a few special visitors talking to us about special holidays and traditions in their house. At each stop the students are making a craft to represent that country and the things they learned. The students are having so much fun. Happy Holidays to all of our students and families!
Fifth Grade Explorers
The 5th grade explorers have had an action-packed month that recently included a field trip to the Teaching Museum and some group collaboration projects. During their visit to the Teaching Museum, the students had a chance to learn more about World War II standards including a look at primary sources, a play about Anne Frank, and a mini-research activity. Students had the opportunity to try on clothes from the time period, explore a replica 1930s kitchen, and ultimately take a deeper dive into our Social Studies content. They have continued this learning in the classroom with a group project where they researched topics related to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and designed a presentation for their classmates. They have all worked so hard this first semester and are looking forward to a well deserved winter break!

Clinic Needs and News
Clothing Donations
Accidents happen - in the classroom, at recess, at lunch or the bathroom. When our Explorers get messy they often head to the Clinic to get cleaned up. We keep extra clothes on hand for those quick changes and appreciate donations of all clothing sizes. If you have any clothing items you'd like to contribute you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the front desk.24-Hour Rule
As several viral illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19 are going around, we would like to remind you to keep your students home if they have symptoms like sore throat, runny nose, cough and congestion, fever and chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Students may return to school after their symptoms have improved and they have been fever free without medicine for 24 hours. The 24-hour rule also applies to vomiting and diarrhea.
MISSING SOMETHING?
Parents, please encourage your students to check regularly for lost items in the Lost and Found. Please mark all student belongings clearly with the child’s name so that it can be identified. Unclaimed items are donated to local charities after the last school day of every month. January’s date is Monday, January 30th.
