T.E.A.M. (formerly DARE) instruction
In conjunction with the Newtown Police Department, sixth graders will begin TEAM instruction the week of January 17th. The Teaching, Educating, And Mentoring (T.E.A.M.) School Liaison Program is a school-based “law related” education program taught by specifically trained law enforcement officers. T.E.A.M. is a proactive effort to make schools and communities safer, promote responsible citizenship, and encourage positive character traits. The T.E.A.M. School Liaison Program’s goal is to unite educators, students, and law enforcement to play an integral part in promoting awareness regarding topics such as laws, consequences, drugs, social media and bullying. The philosophy is that while working together as a team we can create relationships and be united in protecting children. Each lesson is approximately 45-60 minutes in length and will be instructed in a consecutive sequence (one time per week for 8 weeks).

Happy New Year! Feliz Ano Nuevo
Reading Tidbits & Tips
Winter break is a great time to spend cold nights together snuggling up with a good book. Also, in reading to your children you are modeling what good reading looks like and sounds like. Even more importantly, having this joyful time together will create memories connected to reading that will last a lifetime.
STEAM Room Fun!
Mr. Schmoyer and Mrs. Molishus encourage all Goodnoe students to spend time outdoors observing nature. Observation skills are important to many STEAM fields. For the days when you are indoors, you could spend some time exploring the coding programs some of the classes have been using in the STEAM Lab: Code.org, Scratch, MakeCode. Happy New Year to all!

From the Library...
We are excited to bring local teacher and author, Debbie Murphy, to our school for K-3 students on January 24th. If you are interested in purchasing her book, Jackie and the Mona Lisa, to get signed by the author, please click here for the order form and to learn more about her visit. If you already sent in a form, you do not need to send in another form. Orders are due by January 9, 2023. Thank you, as always, for supporting book joy in our students and community.
Multiplication Fact Practice: Online Flashcards
Looking to improve your multiplication-fact skills? Do you want something different than First in Math? Does being timed on your math facts cause you some stress? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should check out Multiplication by Heart. The time commitment is only about 5 minutes each day. Stick with it, and you will be on your way to multiplication master before you know it! https://mathigon.org/multiply
Art Room
Join the CR Art Department to celebrate Creative Kicks Day on Friday, January 13th, 2023. Wear your most creative, colorful and exciting pair of sneakers! Wear a pair that is your favorite, turn an old pair into an exciting new creation, or add some flair with colorful laces! Winter Break is a great time to transform an old pair of sneakers into something new!
After the winter break, Miss. Stuart will be selling your choice of colored laces for a minimum donation of $3. All proceeds will be given to the Neighborhood Outreach Foundation. Take a look at the creative kicks created by all CR art teachers and learn more at the website below!
A note from the School Counselor
With the school holiday break approaching, children may be spending more time on their electronic devices. Here are some suggestions for handling the use of technology at home:
Don’t overreact. It won’t help your child if you set very restrictive limits or send the message that using technology is negative. Try to focus on teaching healthy habits that will stay with your child for a lifetime instead.
Teach kids about technology from a young age. Explain that tablets, computers, and other media devices aren’t toys. Discuss with kids the benefits of technology but also include the risks, while teaching the importance of respecting privacy and protecting personal information in age-appropriate ways.
Protect bedtime. Studies show that using digital media at night can interfere with the quality of sleep. Consider restricting the use of phones, tablets and computers for at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
Pay attention. Have open and honest discussions about what websites and types of content are off-limits. Understand the different types of media your child is using, and check your child’s browser history to see what websites they visit. There is software to help filter or restrict access to content that is inappropriate and off-limits.
Teach good online behavior. People often say things online that they would never say to a person’s face. Talk to your children about being respectful in their digital interactions. Encourage your children to come to you if they witness cyberbullying or other upsetting information online. Discuss digital decision-making. Explain why children should not download unfamiliar programs, click on suspicious links or share personal information on websites. Also teach your children not to respond to unsolicited messages from strangers and to tell you if they get them.
Foster real-life friendships. When kids find it difficult to connect with peers they often spend more time online than with friends in real life. However, digital friendships aren’t a replacement for spending time in person. Help your child develop social skills and nurture their real-life friendships.

Enjoy the holidays!

DOGS/PETS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
When escorting students to and from school, please do not bring pets on school grounds or into the school building. Many of our children have pet allergies or are afraid of animals; therefore, the presence of animals in school or on school grounds is prohibited. Some classes at Goodnoe Elementary School do participate in the Nor’Wester Reading Dogs program, so on occasion you may see dogs visiting. These dogs are specially trained and licensed to work in the schools with students. No other animals are permitted on school property during school hours. Please refer to our board policy for more information on animals in school policy 718 https://go.boarddocs.com/pa/coun/Board.nsf/vpublic?open#

SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
During the past few weeks, your child’s class has been reviewing the SW-PBIS (School Wide- Positive Behavior Interventions & Support) school expectations. The lessons included a class discussion, modeling and practicing of respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in the locations listed on the school-wide matrix. Your child’s class also learned about the voice levels that are expected for the different locations. Please take some time to review the matrix and voice level chart with your child. Our school website has a SW-PBIS link with more specific information regarding the structure of Goodnoe’s School Wide Positive Interventions & Support system. Check out more information at the links below.
