Happy New Year!
Dear LISD Families,
We loved welcoming our students back from winter break this week as we embark on what promises to be a very busy spring semester. We hope you all had a lovely break from school and that you stayed warm and nourished during the power outage, snow, and cold snap here on Lopez.
This month, the elementary school is shining the light on the character habit of perseverance. Teachers will be discussing this habit with students in the classroom, making connections between academic success, growth mindset, and perseverance. There will be an elementary assembly early in February and students will be recognized for demonstrating this important habit of scholarship.
In secondary, we are preparing for Term 2 character awards. After each term, we gather students in the gym during advisory and recognize students for demonstrating each of the LISD K-12 habits of character: kindness, belong, ownership, and perseverance.
Again, Happy New Year. We wish you health and happiness in 2023.
All our best to you and your family,
Mary and Martha

Sports Update
High School Basketball
This evening, the Lobo Pack honored MR Buffum in a thank you ceremony after the boys' basketball game. MR has coached for LISD off and on for three decades. His service to our district and our students is much appreciated by many Lopez families, and the gym was full tonight!
Next week, you can come on out to cheer for the Lobo boys team at home on Tuesday, January 10 at 6:00.
Middle School Girls' Basketball
We are in need of a middle school girls' basketball coach. If interested, please contact shagge@lopezislandschool.org to apply. We will forward your application to our athletic director, Marina Steinbrueck, and she will set up an interview. The job posting can be found on the district website. If you have specific questions about what the position entails, you can contact Marina at msteinbrueck@lopezislandschool.org.
The middle school basketball season begins on February 8.
Elementary News
Kindergarten and 3rd Grade Buddies
It was sweet to see how much maturity and big kid-ness 3rd graders employed today. They were very aware of setting solid examples and helping to make kinders feel very welcome and safe. After they had some drawing and get-to-know-you time in our classroom, kinders led the 3rd graders to their classroom where they got tours and read a book with new buddies.
Elementary Technology Agreements
The technology agreements need to be signed for every student that is enrolled, parent partner or otherwise. If the agreement is not signed, then the student's account will need to be deactivated and they will no longer be allowed to use technology at LISD. The deadline is Wednesday, January 11th.
If it is absolutely an impossible task to fill out this form online, you can come into the elementary office and someone will print a form for you to sign. The Qmlativ login steps and instructions for filling out the form are below. Keep in mind that if you do not get a password reset email, it is probably in your spam folder.

3. If you haven't logged in before or if you don't know your password, select the forgot password link. You should receive an email to reset your login. If you don't see the message, please check your spam folder. Log in.

Secondary News
iReady Testing
Winter iReady testing for secondary students will begin next week. The iReady is something we call an interim assessment. We administer it several times a year to give us an idea of where students are in terms of grade level standards in both reading and math. We gave the test to all secondary students in the fall since it is a new assessment for our district. In the winter, middle school students will take it, as well as any high school student who was not yet at grade level on the fall assessment or who has not yet met the SBAC or ASVAB graduation requirement for the state of Washington.
On-line Education Coordinator
Sara Wysocki is our new part time on-line education coordinator. She will be supporting students taking on-line classes through Edgenuity and BYU. This is a new position and we are working out the kinks, but we are very excited about providing extra support for students who want to take advantage of the expanded learning opportunities offered through on-line courses. Welcome, Sara!
Schedule Changes
At the beginning of each new semester, a student may complete a schedule change request form. Our counselor, Jeanna Carter, will meet with the student to discuss the request. Until that meeting, the student should remain in the class listed on their schedule. After the first week of the semester, schedule changes require parent permission.
ALIGN Meeting
After School Program
There will be no After School Program on Friday, January 13th, for elementary or middle school students, due to staff professional development.
Middle School Dance
The middle school ASB representatives are hoping to host a dance next Saturday, January 14 from 7:00-10:00. They need chaperones! All chaperones must be on the list of approved school district volunteers, which means they need to have a background check for THIS SCHOOL YEAR. Background check forms are in the district office or you can email Sara Jones (sjones@lopezislandschool.org) and she'll send you one.
Middle school parents, please don't let your child talk you out of chaperoning. Without parent chaperones, we likely will not be able to have a dance.
If you can chaperone, please contact Martha Martin (mmartin@lopezislandschool..org) or Richard Tetu (rtetu@lopezislandschool.org).

Update from Nurse Will
Good News for Students' Teeth:
A dental hygienist will come to the school on January 25th to do "smile checks" for K-12 students. It is a quick one-minute look in the mouth to check for cavities and/or infections. If it's determined that treatment is recommended, students will have the option of receiving treatment on April 27th-28th when the Snohomish County Mobile Dental Team comes to visit.
If you choose to have your student not participate in the "smile checks" on 1/25, please sign and return the opt out form, which will be sent home with students next week.
