November 5: “The Spirituality of Place: Finding Your Home in the World,” Rev. Scott W. Alexander
Scott writes: After 52 years of being away from my “home state” of Wisconsin, I have finally returned (with this ministerial settlement here in Mequon) to the familiar part of the world where I started. This has brought me great satisfaction, and caused me lately to reflect a lot about “the Spirituality of Place” and how one feels “rooted” (and at home) in the world. Do be with us as we explore this important spiritual topic.
November 12: “The Spirituality of Sleep,” Rev. Scott W. Alexander
Scott writes: With the Daylight’s Savings time change occurring last Sunday – and darkness coming earlier each afternoon now until the Winter Solstice in late December – what better time to explore the spiritual role which sleep plays in all of our lives (whether we are aware of it or not!). So wake up refreshed from your sleep this Sunday and join us in reflecting on both the surprising meaning of sleep, and the dangers of being deprived of it!

Name Quilt, round 3
The making of our Name Quilt continues with a quilting bee after the service on November 12. We hope to finish quilting the squares – a major milestone! If you are interested in participating, please let Ed Ahrenhoerster know by emailing him at ed.ahrenhoerster@nwsdigital.com. Or feel free to just stop by and see our progress so far. Food and beverages will be provided.
To participate in this phase of the UCN quilt, you will need a machine that has a dropped feed dog feature and a free-motion darning/quilting foot. Dana Lusk will bring two machines with those features. Machine quilting experience is preferable, but Dana will provide instructions if needed. If you have any questions regarding the type of sewing machines or quilting, please contact Dana at danalusk04@gmail.com.
What is a Chalice Chat?
Contrary to what you may have heard, it is not a conversation with a chalice. Your Leadership Board wants to interview the congregation on how the Board is performing its responsibilities. They also want to ask you a few other questions regarding the church and its operation (services, our new minister, RE, etc.). Between now and December 1, a Board member will have or may be contacting you to make an appointment to discuss these issues. Answers will be collected and compiled for evaluation. We will also conduct a Barn Banter for those who may have missed the Chalice Chats and for more input from those who already have been interviewed.
Please be thinking about how you feel and what you think about the Board, the congregation, and the church as a whole. If you have questions or comments, please contact Dan Lusk (dlusk09@gmail.com or 414-234-9406) or Bernie Booth (berniebooth@hotmail.com or 262-333-5705).
Have a great weekend!
First Sunday Lunch
A reminder: Daylight Savings Time ends at 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 5, giving you an extra hour of sleep. So remember to set your clocks back one hour. And be sure to join us for Soups & Salads (plus breads, desserts, beverages, and conversation) at First Sunday Lunch in the Fellowship Hall downstairs after the November 5 morning service. See you there!

Share the Plate Update
The Social Justice Committee has chosen the Entrepreneurs In Training Partnership (EITP) to receive the Share the Plate donations for November and December. The program is a collaboration between UW-Madison Extension and Defy Ventures, a national organization dedicated to helping end recidivism by training current and formerly incarcerated people to become entrepreneurs. These members of the justice community receive intensive training and skill building and are then connected with coaches from their local business communities. Entrepreneurs in Training (EITs) receive practical wisdom on how to start a thriving business and lifelong access to the alumni community of entrepreneurs. The program’s mission is to enable one of America’s largest forgotten communities to defy the odds, learn skills, and become contributing members of the community.
Half of the donations, cash or check, will go to Hunger Task force. Checks can be written to UCN with “Share the Plate” on the memo line. On our website, www.ucnorth.org, you can donate by using PayPal or Breeze. The Northliner also contains a QR code to scan for making a donation. Thank you for your generosity.

Your input helps to shape the important work of equity and justice in our community. Thank you for your involvement!

Unlocked Door Problem
Lately, we have had a problem with entry doors on both levels being unlocked when they should be locked. When the door locks are engaged, they automatically open at 9:00 am and close at 12 noon on Sundays, unless they were manually unlocked with a key.
If the alarm system is active, and a door is opened, even by a vigilant police officer, the Mequon police are notified to respond to the alarm. UCN is charged for every false alarm. We've been charged twice this year, so the next fee will be $300. The last two weeks, entry doors have been found unlocked twice, and luckily the police hadn’t discovered them, so we were not charged.
If you unlock an outside door using a key, please make sure you lock it. And if you find a door unlocked, please lock it with a key, or notify Dan Lusk or Dean Johnson.
Have an Inquiring Mind?
Sure you do. If you would like to know more about Unitarian Universalism and our church, plan to attend the New to UU and UCN Class on Sunday, November 5. It will be held in the Clara Barton Room downstairs from 11:30 to 12:30. Child care will be provided if needed. Feel free to bring any questions you may have; answers are free. For more information, contact Dan Lusk at 262-234-9406 or dlusk09@gmail.com.
Good Grief Group
Losing someone you love is life changing, and grief can be difficult. Sometimes it’s helpful to share with others who have also experienced a deep loss – the sadness, the challenges, the next steps and the joys that may follow. You’re not alone.
Our group meetings are held every other Wednesday from 9:30-11:00 am in Emerson (the large room off the north lobby, upper level). During Thanksgiving week, we'll meet on Monday instead. Judy DeLillo, a new member of the Lay Pastoral Care Team, will help facilitate conversation and support in this new group at UCN. Please contact Judy at 720-935-0851 with any questions.
Morning Meditations
Tuesday Morning Group Meditations continue at 9:30 am in the Sanctuary. No experience necessary. Tap into the wisdom of the ancients as well as current-day teachers. Learn about the mind and breath’s connections as we sit quietly and share our inner experiences. Donations welcome for UCN.
Anna Rychner, facilitator and meditation teacher of the Himalayan tradition.
