December Edition

As 2022 rapidly comes to an end and we embark on 2023 there are so many things to reflect on. 2022 brought a lot of change to CERHS. Rather than complaining about the changes, the Warriors embraced them. I watched our Warrior community welcome new staff and students with open arms (myself included). Our Warriors face adversity head on and do not give up. This was evident with our soccer team this season. The Warriors did not quit their season when their seniors got hurt; instead, the team stepped up, brought home a league championship, a district championships, and were top 8 State placers!

Cle Elum-Roslyn High School is a magical place and the magic doesn't occur by accident. It is the result of a staff that cares about the community they serve. I am proud of our staff for listening to student needs and making changes. I am proud of our students for stepping up and using their voices for good. I am proud of our community for rallying around our school and supporting us! These are the things that make the magic happen!

As we move into 2023, I am excited for what the new year brings! I foresee more pie in faces, laughs, and fun as we face the challenges that are ahead of us!

On November 29, 2022, eleven members of the Yakama Warriors Association made the trip from Yakima to Cle Elum- Roslyn High School to raise the Yakama Nation flag. This monumental event signified the partnership between the Cle Elum-Roslyn School District and the Yakama Nation, as the two groups continue to work together to learn from each other and support the community’s history.

The ceremony began with members of the Yakama Warriors Association raising the flag and playing the National Anthem. It was followed by CERHS student and mascot committee member, Sadie Melhorn, reading the land acknowledgement. Principal, Sarah Houseberg, addressed the audience by introducing the Yakama Warriors Association and thanking the Tribal Council and Education Committee of the Yakama Nation, Deputy Director of Yakama Nation Department of Human Services Arlen Washines, the Yakama Warriors Association, the Cle Elum-Roslyn School Board, and the members of the community who served on our Warrior Mascot Committee. This was followed by the Yakama Warriors Association recognizing all branches of the military and those who have served by playing each branch’s song. The ceremony concluded with members of the Yakama Warriors Association playing TAPs and Amazing Grace to honor those veterans who are no longer with us. A reception followed the ceremony that allowed the community to meet the Yakama Warriors and learn from their experiences.

Winter Sports have kicked off and we are looking forward to another season of new athletic accomplishments! Be sure to check out our Warriors in action! When cheering on our Warriors, be sure to maintain good sportsmanship. Warriors cheer each other on; they do do not taunt the refs or the other teams. Poor sportsmanship from fans will not be tolerated and you will be asked to leave the event.

Senior Kayla Barr, Junior Sadie Melhorn, and Swiftwater Junior Sarah Hussels are the 2022-2023 CERSD School Board youth representatives. These three ladies are passionate about making changes to secondary education; however, they are dedicated to making changes that will support students at all grade levels. If you have ideas for how we can improve our education system, please let one of these three youth reps know! They represent the students of CERSD.

Now that winter is upon us, here are a few friendly reminders:

• Visitors must buzz in to enter the school. Students, please do not open doors for visitors, staff, or friends- this creates a safety hazard!
• Do not park in front of the school. That areas is for visitor parking.
• Parents, please do not drop students off in front of the band room. It creates a traffic nightmare!
• Do not park vehicles in the school parking lots over night. This interferes with our ability to plow.
• Use extra caution when driving and give yourself plenty of time to stop.
