I Refused to Step on the Scale
What followed was one of the best doctor’s visits I’ve ever had. My doc spent an entire hour with me talking about my goals and my mindset. Together we established some very specific and achievable goals that really just focused on building strength and energy.
I’m not in denial about who I am. I’m fortunate to be in pretty good health, but that gets lost in modern medicine’s obsession with weight. Anyone who looks at me knows I am not a model. Really, who is? We are all average and interesting. We are all beautiful in our own ways. We are all trying. I discovered in that appointment that I am not on a ride. I actually have some control of the experience. The systems won’t change unless we push back on them. And little, incremental changes can lead to real, systemic change. It certainly changed my experience yesterday.
Next time you visit the doc, if playing by the rules isn’t serving you, try driving the discussion you need to have. You might be pleasantly surprised!
If this is a topic that interests you, I highly recommend the podcast, Maintenance Phase. Take a listen. You won’t regret it.
