The Willis Weekly
A Firebird Publication - September 15th, 2023
A Note From Mr. Delp
Dear Willis Families,
Happy Friday!
It was a good week at Willis. Yesterday, I was happy to see our students enjoying their time at our first school dance of the year. Socialization is a big part of the junior high school experience and dances are one way for students to do that in a positive manner.
We are rapidly approaching the end of the quarter and fall break. If you feel like your child needs assistance with any aspect of school, please reach out to a teacher or staff member. You can also encourage your student to attend after school tutoring, or Homework Hub for additional assistance.
Have a wonderful weekend, Firebirds!

Chandler Public Library @ Willis
Willis Library had lots have fun this week. Chandler Public Library came on Wednesday and showed us how to make tissue paper flowers in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month in September. On Thursday our bullet journaling club came and made favorites pages with Higher Ground. There will be no crafting or bullet journal club next week, as the library will be closed for Latino Leaders Week. Both activities will resume the following week.
Firebird Athletics
As we wind down the 1st quarter, we would like to thank all of our student-athletes who participated in baseball, volleyball and wrestling.
Good luck to our Firebird wrestlers in the EVC Championship on Saturday at Casteel HS.
Next quarter students can try out for boys' basketball and girls' softball.
We also offer cross country for both boys and girls. There are no cuts for this sport allowing everyone to participate.

Signs of Suicide (SOS)
Mental Health Corner
September SEL Focus: Suicide Awareness and Prevention
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (https://www.nami.org/mhstats), suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-34. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by suicide. Our goal is ensuring families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.
Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (https://nspw.afsp.org/) if you ask someone directly if they are thinking about suicide it will NOT put the idea in their head. Often they will be relieved someone cares enough to hear their about their experience with thoughts of suicide. Asking the question, ‘are you thinking about suicide?’ communicates that you are open to talking about suicide in a non-judgmental and supportive way. Asking directly can open the door for communication about help.
Help is available. There is hope. Suicide can be prevented.
