Extended School Year (ESY) Services 2020-2021
The Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE) provides Extended School Year (ESY) to students who meet eligibility criteria for its six elementary school districts. D41 Administration has been working hand-in-hand with CASE to prepare for ESY for students who are eligible. We are thrilled to report that ESY will be held at Churchill Elementary School this summer. Your student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) team has/will consider whether your student is eligible at his/her annual review or a subsequent IEP meeting.
Given the circumstances of the COVID 19 Pandemic, we are expanding the length of ESY this school year from 14 to 22 school days and offering two sessions (either a morning or afternoon session). This structure allows us to maximize available summer dates for students to hone in on skill work. Opening this in-person school opportunity for more students who may be impacted by both a disability as well as the effects of COVID 19. It also allows for continued mitigation efforts for health and safety in the building as our very adept custodial staff continues to fully clean classrooms and other frequently used spaces in between sessions. At this time, ESY sessions are scheduled:
Where: Churchill Elementary 240 Geneva Rd. Glen Ellyn
When: June 8, 2021 - July 15, 2021
Days: Monday - Thursday, (excluding Monday July 5th in observance of July 4th holiday)
Times:
- Early Childhood: 8:15 - 10:15 a.m.
- Kindergarten - 8th Grade: 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. OR 12:30 - 3:00 p.m.
If your student is eligible, your case manager will reach out to you by April 12, 2021, to explain how you will complete the NEW on-line application process this school year. ESY instruction focuses on academic, functional, and social-emotional goals to help your student maintain current skills as selected by the student’s IEP team. Students are grouped from all CASE participating districts for instruction based on age, identified needs and goals selected for maintenance and support. Related services including speech, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, transportation, and nursing care are part of ESY services as determined appropriate for each student. ESY has traditionally been a half-day program offered in one session, Monday - Thursday for approximately four weeks so this increased support is welcomed at this unusual time. A Remote Only ESY option will also be available ONLY to students who are currently remote only and who continue to to have this need based on health and safety.
All students who participate in ESY, albeit in-person or remote, are expected to remain in the district on ESY dates. If a student is absent or on vacation during the time of an ESY session, remote sessions will not be offered. If your son or daughter is also eligible for the Summer Acceleration Program offered June 7 - July 25, Monday through Thursday, we encourage you to first consider ESY as it is tailored for your student’s individual educational needs.
