Eastview WIN Time on Wednesday Afternoons in the Learning Commons
Starting Wednesday, November 1st, students can benefit from an opportunity for academic support every Wednesday afternoon from 2:40pm – 4:15pm in the Learning Commons. Students are supported to complete their schoolwork learning in a supervised setting. Faculty and staff are available along with upper-class peer tutors (especially skilled in Mathematics). Students will identify their priorities (“What I Need” or “What’s Important Now”), create a plan for the most efficient use of their time, celebrate their accomplishments, and leave with a plan for continued success. Students do not need to sign up in advance for WIN Time. We do ask that students plan to be there for the start at 2:40pm so they can benefit from the full support. We will keep a log of students and their engagement (arrival/departure time and their focus/work while they are there). Lightning Snap Losing Streak During Holiday Break
Eastview’s boys varsity hockey team dropped two of three games during the holiday break, falling to 6-6 for the season. The Lightning lost a 3-1 nonconference game to Holy Family on Thursday December 21 at Victoria Ice Arena. Although Eastview battled to a scoreless tie after one period, two costly penalties led to goals for Holy Family in the second. Senior Defenseman Kevin Woehler scored an even strength goal with 4:37 left in the game to give the Lightning hope. Senior Goalie Gabe Otis was pulled a few minutes later and Eastview had some chances during the man advantage before Holy Family netted an empty net goal to seal their victory.
Eastview stopped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 comeback victory over conference rival Lakeville South at Hasse Arena on Saturday, December 23. The Lightning fell behind 1-0 in the first period before Sophomore Forward Sam Wooten scored on a breakaway. Senior Forward Zach Wooten then scored a shorthanded goal to put the Lightning up 2-1. After falling behind the Cougars 3-2 in the second period, the Lightning came back with their best period of the season in the third. Senior Forwards Billy Downs and Cam Roth scored goals within 16 seconds of each other to forge a 4-3 lead in the opening minutes of the period. Senior Forward Caleb Nelson assisted on both goals. Sam Wooten later scored his second goal of the game to increase the lead to 5-3. Eastview limited the Cougars to one third-period shot on goal and finished the game with a 27-21 shot advantage.
On Tuesday, January 2, the Lightning lost to Shakopee 2-1 at Shakopee Ice Arena to drop to 4-2 in the South Suburban Conference. Eastview played well enough to win the game, outshooting Shakopee 36-24 while enjoying good offensive zone time. But the Sabers kept the Lightning off the scoreboard until under three minutes left in the game, when Senior Forward Billy Downs tipped in a rebound off a shot by Senior Forward Jordan Brothers. The Lightning were whistled for a season-high 12 penalties and were unable to convert on any of their six power play opportunities. Eastview resumes its conference schedule at Rosemount on Thursday, January 4 at 7:00 p.m.
GIRLS HOCKEY
The Eastview Girls Varsity Hockey Team kicked off winter break with a 2-0 win over Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato. The goals in the game were scored by Jenna Nelvin and Ella Schaefer. Goalie Beth Bigalke recorded her first career shut-out in net saving all 28 shots.
The Lightning had a record of 1-1-1 in their Holiday Tournament at Burnsville Ice Arena. They started the tournament on Wednesday, December 27th, with a 3-1 loss to Hastings. The Lightning started strong with a goal in the first period by Erin Hayward assisted by Sari Cords, but they were unable to find the back of the net again. Hastings scored the tying goal half way through the second and the go ahead goal with just over 3 minutes left in the game. Hastings rounded out the scoring with an empty netter to give them the 3-1 victory.
Eastview bounced back on Thursday with a big 5-2 win over Hopkins/St. Louis Park. Hopkins/SLP started the scoring going up 1-0 five minutes into the game but the Lightning came back and scored three goals to round out the first. Eastview’s first goal came from Brielle Clardy assisted by Brynn Dihel. Then Erin Hayward scored back to back goals with the first being assisted by Ella Schaefer and the second assisted by Sari Cords and Ella Schaefer. After a scoreless second period, Eastview scored two more in the third. Brielle Clardy put Eastview’s fourth goal in and Ellie Groebner got the fifth and final goal for Eastvies assisted by Brielle Clardy. Hopkins/SLP was able to score one more goal with 10 minutes left to round out the scoring for the game.
The Lightning finished the tournament on Friday with a 1-1 tie against Metro-South. Eastview got on the board first on a power play goal by Ella Schaefer assisted by Sari Cords and Ireland Murphy. Eastview was unable to hold onto the lead with Metro-South scoring the tying goal with three and a half minutes left in the game. After a scoreless overtime, the game ended in a tie.
