Hello FUSD Staff and Community,
We are down to the final days of school – our last day of instruction is Friday, June 2 – and we know the remaining days will be filled with learning, celebrations and heartfelt goodbyes or see-you-laters. I am proud of everything our students and staff have accomplished this year, and I look forward to joining many of our staff, students and community at upcoming graduations and other events.
This is Classified School Employee Week, and I thank each of our classified CSEA, SEIU and FSMA employees for their vital support of our students and schools.
As announced at this week’s Board of Education meeting, Dan Tan is FUSD’s 2023 Classified Employee of the Year! Tiong “Dan” Tan, a Bus Driver 2, was also named the 2023 Alameda County Classified Employee of the Year for Transportation Services.
The following outstanding staff were also nominated for Classified School Employee of the Year: Paola Betancourt de Ortiz, Mary Barrs, Michele Forsythe, Christine Haynes, Shobha Master, Wayne Moller, Jayeshree Prasad, Radhikha Ramachandran, Shanthika Sukumar, Trudy Wentworth, Patricia Young and Salena Yung. Congratulations to each nominee, and thank you for your professional dedication and excellence.
This week FUSD honored our retiring employees, who represent a total of 1,787 years of service to our students, schools and community. I wish our retirees well in the next chapter of their lives, and our district thanks each for their contributions to our students’ success and well-being.
This is the final scheduled newsletter for the school year. Please check your email for updates from the District and our schools, and follow FUSD on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to see regular updates on our students, staff and schools. Until the launch of our new website at fremontunified.org in the coming weeks, please visit our current website for posted updates.
I wish you a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing our returning students on the first day of school: August 16, 2023.

New Middle Schools in 2023-24
FUSD’s three remaining junior highs – Centerville, Hopkins and Thornton – are preparing to become middle schools in 2023-24. With this transition complete, all attendance areas will be aligned in grade spans, with elementary schools serving students up to grade 5, and middle schools serving grades 6 to 8.
All middle school campuses will welcome 6th grade students on the first day of school: August 16, 2023.
The construction and facilities modernization at FUSD middle schools were made possible by the Measure E Bond, which the Fremont community generously supported in 2014 to build and improve school facilities. Click here to learn more about the status of these and other Measure E projects.
Expanded Learning Opportunities Program
The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides funding for extended day and enrichment programs for elementary school students in California.
Eligible students can attend the after school programs and other opportunities at approved locations paid by FUSD.
The ELO-P application for the 2023-24 year is now open for submissions. Please visit the FUSD ELO-P website for more details.
2023-24 New Student Enrollment Open Now
Transitional kindergarten (TK), kindergarten, sibling priority and other new student enrollment for the 2023-24 school year is open now at www.fremont.k12.ca.us/enrollment.
FUSD will offer extended day kindergarten starting in the 2023-24 school year. Starting next year, kindergarten start times will match or closely align to the schedule for grades 1-5 at each school, and all elementary schools in FUSD will offer expanded day care to serve students after school hours.
Eligibility for transitional kindergarten is expanding: children who will be 5 years old between September 2, 2023 and April 2, 2024 can enroll in this free program for 2023-24 to get a head start in school and build their social, communication and independence skills.
If your student is currently attending an FUSD school in grades TK-11, there is no need to re-enroll.
Preschool
Fremont Unified School District State Preschool applications are now available for 2023-24. It is a half-day program at several FUSD locations, and free for income-eligible families. We also have a fee-based program. Give your child the gift of a quality preschool education!
Applications, more information available on the FUSD Preschool webpage.
Looking Ahead: COVID-19 Protocols in 2023-24
California’s COVID-19 state of emergency expired March 1, as did the local health emergency in Alameda County.
FUSD will continue our current COVID-19 protocols through the end of the 2022-23 school year.
As we move into summer programs and the 2023-24 school year, FUSD will move into the next phase of pandemic response in alignment with local and state public health requirements.
As of June 3, 2023, the following COVID-19 protocols will be in effect:
Students and staff must continue to report COVID-19 cases to their school/supervisor if they were on campus or involved in a school/work activity during their infectious period (two days before either symptoms began or positive test was administered, whichever is first).
In alignment with California Department of Public Health guidance, COVID-19 positive individuals must isolate for five days, then may return to school/work — regardless of testing — as long as they’re feeling well, have improving symptoms and are fever-free for 24 hours.
Face coverings following a COVID-19 diagnosis will be:
recommended for students through day 10 or two consecutive negative tests per CDPH guidance, and
required for employees through day 10 per Cal/OSHA guidance for workplaces.
Close contact notifications and testing opportunities will only be provided to staff exposed to COVID-19 in the workplace as outlined in Cal/OSHA guidance.
FUSD will maintain compliance with all applicable Cal/OSHA requirements for employers.
MAZE Process
MAZE is Fremont Unified School District’s annual registration confirmation process in which parents/guardians:
provide required information for each enrolled student - such as emergency contacts,
acknowledge certain parent/guardian and student rights and responsibilities, and
access specific school forms/information.
Completing the MAZE process ensures your student’s school has accurate information, and allows families to view student schedules/classroom assignments and their teachers when that information is released in August.
MAZE forms for all FUSD students must be completed online through the Infinite Campus (IC) Parent Portal. The window to complete the MAZE process for the 2023-24 school year is July 17 to August 7, 2023.
While MAZE forms will not be available until July 17, we strongly recommend that you take a few moments and log into your IC Parent Portal now to address any access issues. Click here for IC Parent Portal troubleshooting and support.
Please do not complete the New Student Registration as it will duplicate your student(s).
Parents/Guardians will receive a notice MAZE information at the email address indicated in the IC Parent Portal, and updates will be posted to both the FUSD and school websites.
New Websites in 2023-24
We’re excited to announce that FUSD is updating our district and school websites! By July 1, all websites will have a new look and be under a new domain: fremontunified.org.
Look out for more information in the coming months!
