Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
November 1, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
We had a wonderful month of learning and fun here at Sanborn! From author visits to spirit week, Sanborn was an exciting school during the month of October. Congratulations to the September Golden Paw Award Winners: Mrs. Garcia and Mrs. Moore's first grade classes, and Ms. King's fifth grade class. There were multiple Golden Paws in my mailbox for all of these classes. All of the students collectively displayed our three tiger traits: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. They were able to celebrate with some extra recess at the beginning of October. Way to Go!
As we approach the month of November, parent/teacher conferences will be here before we know it! Conferences will be held on Friday, November 17, during the school day for families in Mrs. Goode's kindergarten classes. On Monday, November 20, conferences for all other students and families will be from 12:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. The conference schedule for Tuesday, November 21, is from 7:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, I encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher as soon as possible to schedule this important conference. This is a wonderful time to highlight all of your child's strengths, and to work together to find solutions for any areas of concern. We know that a positive home-school connection provides a successful and cohesive experience for our students! Thank you for your support!
Ms. Sarli and I are grateful to lead such a wonderful school, and we appreciate your support each and every day. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal
Mayella Sarli, Assistant Principal

Read for the Record Day: October 26, 2023
Thank you to Mrs. Jenkinson, one of Sanborn's Reading Specialists, for organizing the annual Read for the Record Day! Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience that celebrates children’s early language and social-emotional development. The event is a day of celebration and fun, and builds an intergenerational community through reading and raises awareness around the critical importance of early literacy and access to inclusive, high-quality books.
This year, our primary classrooms were treated to guest readers on October 26 who came and read the book, With Lots of Love, written by Jenny Torres Sanchez and illustrated by André Ceolin!
Monthly Attendance Highlight
Regular and consistent attendance for students is very important in order to make sure that your students do not fall behind in school. For the month of October, Sanborn's average daily attendance rate was 89.9%, which dropped from the month of September (91.5%). We are looking for this rate to improve each and every month in order to best support the learning needs of our students. Please review the picture below which provides more information about the importance of consistent attendance for students. If you need support regarding your student's attendance, please reach out to your student's teacher or to Kate Arenberg and Mayella Sarli in the office and we can support your needs.
Cold Weather Recess Guidelines
As the temperature continues to drop, here are the district guidelines related to cold weather recess:
Indoor recess is determined based on the following guidelines:
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is below 0°F, all students will remain inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is between 0°-10°F, the preferred procedure is a rotation of 20 minutes for lunch, a 20-minute outdoor recess, and a 20-minute indoor recess. However, at the principal's discretion, students may be kept inside for the entire lunch hour.
- If the temperature outside, together with the wind chill, is above 10°F, students will have regular outdoor recess.
Please make sure your child is bringing the appropriate winter gear to school to stay warm. If you need support with winter gear for your child(ren), please let the office know. We have noticed many students without the proper warm winter gear as the temperature has recently dropped.

Staff Highlight: AIME & MILE Teams
October is AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) Awareness Month! Many students in the AIME and MILE program use AAC to support their communication. For many students, communication is most successful when they are able to use multiple modalities (i.e communication boards, speech-generating devices, switches, oral speech, gestures, etc.) to communicate. AAC allows students in the AIME and MILE programs the opportunity to make requests, ask questions, tell jokes, share their opinions and develop friendships with peers. Communication looks different for everyone!
