Bad moon rising?
Some who work in police & emergency services have anecdotally claimed that FM (full moon) nights are busier, crazier, & more dangerous than nights when the moon is dim. There are 7 myths about FM, do you ignore? - surgery isn't safe during a FM is false, some studies suggest that it's actually safer to have heart surgery during FM; the moon has a dark side is false, because the moon rotates there is always a % that can never be seen from earth; cats & dogs go crazy during a FM is true, studies do show an uptick in ER visits; the FM has zero effect on your sleep is false, scientists discovered that adults do seem to get less rest; kids get hyper & won't go to sleep is true, scientists tested this theory & discovered that kids are always active during moon phases; moon landing didn't really happen has been debunked; & FM make everyone nuts is true that there is slightly more crime & more visits to the ER during FM, however scientists suggest it is due to having more light.

making a difference
Celebrating work anniversaries this week - Scott Sapp, Park Maintenance - 12 years; Kelsey Cohalla, Firefighter/EMT - 6 years; John Hudgens, Refuse Coordinator - 4 years; Hailee Arnold, Group Fitness Instructor - 3 years; Alexandria Arnold, Community Center Marketing & Outreach - 2 years; Brittney Olds, Firefighter/Paramedic - 1 year.
Cooking safety begins with YOU - Pay attention to fire prevention - cooking is the leading cause of home fires, 40% of home fires start in the kitchen, more than half of non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victim tried to fight the fire themselves; children under 5 face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking than being burned in a cooking fire; working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires almost in half. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove, keep a 3' kid-free zone around stove, set timers, plan & practice a home fire escape plan, your fire department provides prevention & protection education.
small town vibes
- There seems to be some interest in how we compare with Splash Parks. So, we inquired - Smithville & Liberty do not measure how much water is used, Kearney used 7M gallons between Memorial Day & Labor Day, ES used 138K gallons. The big difference Smithville, Liberty & Kearney have flow through systems; Lawson & ES have recirculating systems.
- The Westside CID & the Sales Tax on recreational marijuana begins collection on October 1st. Thank you for giving our community the tools to connect the east & west sides, and to create a great entryway from the west. Also, we look forward to solving problems that result from operating around legalized use of marijuana.
- Housing Authority will receive $250K grant to be used for safety; City will receive $250K grant to be used to abate hazardous materials to reduce the cost of redevelopment of older, abandoned or historic buildings.
- Conversations this week with investors making plans to invest in ES Opportunity Zone, will be excited to share news when these private activities become public.
- Police made a car chase arrest this week using multi-agency communication channels that allowed us to track a crime occurring in a neighboring community traveling into our community. Thank you for investments made in the MARRS radio system & considering technology as an upstream solutions.
