Calendar Updates
Calendar Updates: Spring break is just around the corner, beginning with a two-hour early dismissal on Friday, March 31, 2023. Please note that Schools are closed for all students and 10-11 month staff from April 3-6, and all schools and offices are closed April 7 and 10. Students will return to school on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Additionally, the Superintendent and staff presented updates to the calendar to the Board of Education on March 8 identifying potential changes to the end of this school year, pending approval by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Board of Education of St. Mary’s County. These changes are based on a mild winter - and therefore no snow days this year, as well as recent guidance from MSDE that allows for the use of virtual learning days in our calendar. We encourage you to view the March 8 Board Meeting presentation and provide input through this brief survey.
A moment in history featuring: Mae Carol Jemison
Mae Carol Jemison (born October 17, 1956) is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which the Endeavour orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.
Born in Alabama and raised in Chicago, Jemison graduated from Stanford University with degrees in chemical engineering as well as African and African-American studies. She then earned her medical degree from Cornell University. Jemison was a doctor for the Peace Corps in Liberia and Sierra Leone from 1983 until 1985 and worked as a general practitioner. In pursuit of becoming an astronaut, she applied to NASA.
Jemison left NASA in 1993 and founded a technology research company. She later formed a non-profit educational foundation and through the foundation is the principal of the 100 Year Starship project funded by DARPA. Jemison also wrote several books for children and appeared on television several times, including in a 1993 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She holds several honorary doctorates and has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.

In-School SAT for all SMCPS Juniors - March 22
SMCPS will administer the In-School SAT, free of charge, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 to all Juniors.
To prepare for your exam, all students are encouraged to create a College Board account. If they have not already done so, you can do so here, then link your account to Khan Academy for additional practice.
Once you have logged in to your account, you can view your October 2022 PSAT scores and link them to Khan Academy (Link Below) for SAT Prep.
Why should juniors take the SAT?
SAT scores may be required for admissions.
Strong scores may help your admissions chances.
Studies show students who take SAT a second time score higher than students who take test only once.
May be required for scholarships, transfers and special programs.
Scholarships may require scores.

Maryland School Survey - All students in grades 9-11
State law requires that all public schools in Maryland survey students about school climate. The purpose of the survey is to gain valuable information about the quality and character of each school’s learning environment so that schools can promote a climate that supports student learning. All students, grades 9 through 11, will take the Maryland School Survey per MSDE. The survey will ask students about topics such as student engagement, interactions with adults and with other students in the school, the school environment, bullying, and safety. The survey will not ask about a student’s personal experiences, and students will not be asked to provide any information that might violate their privacy.
Students will complete the survey during regular school hours during the testing window (February 21 through April 21) in their Science class. If a student does not have a science class in their schedule, they will be contacted by Ms. Kiehlmeier about another time to complete the survey.
Please read this letter for more information.
