We will have Virtual Open House on Tuesday, September 13, beginning at 5:30pm. All families should have received an email. The email contains a class schedule with links to each class. The teacher of the class will be waiting for you to arrive via Google Meet. Below you will find a schedule for the meeting. LSA will begin observing National Hispanic Heritage Month this Thursday, September 15. We will celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America! On September 15 and 16, our students in our Spanish classes will represent their favorite Hispanic contributor in a Latino Walk of Fame as a part of a class project. We will have our annual celebration event on September 29! The entire school community is invited to participate in the event!

The LSA Lock-In will be held Friday, September 16, from 7:00pm to 10:00pm on site at LSA. Pre-sale tickets are $5 and will be sold everyday at lunch starting Wednesday, September 7 through Friday, September 16, at 3:30pm. Tickets will be $7 at the door on the night of the event. The SGA and Spirit Club will be hosting a $1 Raffle fundraiser at the Lock-In as well. Students will have the opportunity to win various handcrafted prizes, including gift cards to local and nearby restaurants! More details will be released to the Longleaf Community in the coming days. In our Advisory last week, students engaged in a live lesson about the events on 9/11. The theme of the lesson was “Using Your Mic For Good,” which focuses on how we can honor and serve, to use our voices for good in our communities. This week, students:

1. Reflect on the relatively unsung story about the 9/11 Boatlift, the largest and fastest water evacuation in world history.

2. Brainstorm acts of service and good deeds to support our school and local community.

3. Honor the lives that were lost and the incredible bravery shown by many Americans.

Longleaf School of the Arts (LSA) is the first charter high school in Raleigh, NC that integrates academics with the fine and performing arts. We are a college preparatory school that prepares students for university rigor while allowing them to explore their creative and artistic side. Our Mission: Longleaf School of the Arts will develop students into confident, responsible, and successful contributors in college, career, and community through mentorship and a challenging curriculum that integrates academics and the fine arts. To achieve its mission, the LSA Board of Directors is responsible for providing governance, and oversight, ensuring compliance. Which in turns enables the growth and development of the school including excellence in academic performance, fiscal responsibility, managed growth, and clear leadership.

The LSA Board is currently recruiting new directors. We are particularly interested in volunteers with expertise in finance, law, arts, education, and/or management. It is a priority of the board to be well-balanced and to represent the diversity of our community. We encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds to consider board membership. We welcome anyone who is interested in serving on the LSA Board to first attend at least one board meetings prior to submitting a letter of interest and resume. Board of Director Candidates will need to pass a background check and if selected for consideration, participate in an interview. Board members must commit to reviewing board materials and attend monthly board meetings, which are typically held the 4th Monday of each month. Board terms are at least 3 years.

Board meetings are posted on the LSA website. After attending at least one board meeting, please submit a resume and a letter of interest with email subject line BOARD OF DIRECTOR CANDIDATE to board@longleafschool.com.

This year, the testing will be individual PCR tests, not pooled testing. This is great for identifying who is positive without requiring retesting for each indivdual in a positive pool.
