Message From Associate Principal Mike Stead
I hope this message finds you well after a week of inclement weather. As we returned to our regular routine this week, I want to extend a warm welcome back to each and every one of you.
Yesterday the district sent out important updates to our calendar for the 2023-2024 school year as a result of last week's inclement weather days. As a result of the inclement weather days, our district will need to make up one day. Please note that this makeup day will occur on Monday, February 19 (Presidents’ Day), which had already been identified on the 2023-2024 academic calendar as one of our inclement weather makeup days. This means that February 19 will be a regular school day.
Additionally, we will need to adjust the length of the 2nd trimester to rebalance the trimesters for the year. 2nd trimester will now end on Thursday, March 14, and the teacher work day (no school day) will move from Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15. This means that March 11 will be a regular school day, and March 15 will be a no school day. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding with these changes.
In addition to our calendar updates, I wanted to highlight a couple of important reminders as we move into early February. Course selection for the upcoming academic year began this Tuesday and will continue through Sunday February 4th. This is a crucial time for you to consider your academic path, and our staff is here to assist you in making informed choices. Counselors will be available to students in the Commons at lunch every day next week, and will also be running Flex support periods Tuesday and Thursday to assist students with course selection.
Winter Conferences are now scheduled for Thursday, February 8th, from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and guardians to engage with teachers, discuss current progress in classes, and make connections with SHS staff. We hope to see you there!
Go Bowmen! Have a wonderful weekend!
Mr. Stead

Course Selection Is Now Live!
This week students in 9th-11th grade began the process of selecting courses for the 2024-2025 school year in their homeroom period. They will have the opportunity over the next two weeks to review their transcript, go over the 2024-2025 Academic Planning Guide, and meet with their counselors to ask questions. Please check in with your students about their selections.
Students need to select courses using StudentVUE. If students have questions about this process, they should check in with their Homeroom teacher, or with a counselor during lunch or sign up for one of the Flex sessions offered by their counselor on Tuesday, January 30th or Thursday, February 1st.
Course selection will close on Sunday, February 4th.
Nominate a Bowmen Game Changer
As you may have heard, the Sherwood School District is engaged in many activities to Celebrate our schools, our students, our staff, and our community. At Sherwood High School, we would love your help in recognizing our staff members who are doing amazing things for our students and families. When you have any positive and exceptional experienced or interactions with our staff, please use the button below to share those with us! We will share that information with the staff member, as well as use any submissions to help identify a staff member of the month that we will recognize at our staff meetings! Bring on those great stories, thank you!
Winter Lockdown Drill
All Sherwood schools will be participating in our second round of lockdown drills for this school year January 29 - February 9. Lockdown drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific actions that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department to continue improving our safety plans. You may notice increased police presence if you are on/near our campus during a lockdown drill, as our SROs do participate in checking our building security during the drill.
During drills, staff and students are secured within their individual classrooms/offices, and there is no movement in the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.
For more information on District emergency response protocols and communication, please visit the SSD website here.
Confer's Corner:
9th Grade Success
The information that we received was insightful and encouraging. There were two common themes: a majority of our 9th grade students are having a positive experience at SHS and that the transition from Middle School to High School was much more difficult than many anticipated.
With the information gathered by students coupled with Trimester 1 and current Trimester 2 data for grades and attendance, the 9th Grade Success Team (NGS) is working to identify interventions and supports to bolster the academic and social success for our 9th Graders this year and for years to come.
If you have a story or experience that you as a student or parent would like to share that you feel could help influence the work we are doing please reach out so that we can learn and grow together.
Erin's Law Information
In July of 2015, the Oregon Legislature passed SB 856, also known as Erin’s Law, which requires schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention instruction for kindergarten through grade 12. In order to meet the requirements in the law and school board policy, Sherwood High School will implement four sexual abuse prevention lessons each year. These lessons will be taught during Homeroom in order to provide this required instruction to all students. All high school teaching staff participate in professional training required by Erin’s Law before teaching these lessons.
The lessons will address the following topics and skills:
Topics Addressed:
Healthy/Unhealthy Relationships
Teen Dating Violence
Sexual Assault/Abuse
Skills Addressed:
Techniques to Recognize Sexual Abuse
Communication Skills to Establish Boundaries
Skills to Tell a Trusted Adult
The lessons will take place on Mondays and Fridays during homeroom between Monday, February, 5 and Friday, March 8, 2024.
In all areas, parents and guardians are a child’s first and most influential teachers. Families and schools share a common goal: we want students of all ages to be valued, respected, and safe in all aspects of their lives. We want to ensure that families have the opportunity to view the content before instruction takes place. Additional information on Erin’s Law and lesson content can be found on the high school’s website linked here. After you have reviewed the lesson content, you may choose to opt your student out of instruction by filling out the opt-out form: [English] [Espanol]
If you have further questions regarding all or part of the Erin’s Law lessons, please inquire with the high school administration.

Counseling Center
Hello again from your SHS counseling team! We have been hard at work meeting with all of our freshmen and seniors through flex throughout tri 1 to discuss different grade-specific topics. We are now meeting with all sophomores in the coming weeks regarding attendance and course selection reminders. We have loved being able to connect with each of the students on our caseload.
With course selection quickly approaching, we wanted to share some times that students could check in with their counselor to get some individual support and guidance. The course selection window will be open for students in StudentVUE from Jan 23 - February 4.
Counselors will be available to answer course selection questions:
During BOTH lunches from January 23-31 in the commons
During flex on January 25 and 30
This is a very busy time of year for the counseling department and it is challenging to do individual appointments outside of these times. Please utilize the above times to come see us!
The OSU priority application deadline is February 1st. Make sure you have requested transcripts in Naviance and complete your application by next Thursday!
*From OSU: “Students wishing to have access to the greatest set of scholarship opportunities should apply by this date. Admission and scholarships may be awarded after this date are offered on a space and funds available basis.”
